You need three different fabrics. 1/4yd of each.

Cut three rectangles, two of the pink, one of the yellow. Interface the yellow.

Take the two pink pieces (I actually cut one in pink and one in yellow for a contrasting inner). Sew them together on all four sides leaving a small gap on one of the long sides to turn. Clip corner then turn a press.

Fold ends of yellow pocket piece down 1 1/2", press and then stitch down.

Place middle of pocket on middle of larger rectangle. Sew across the middle and then baste up each side (to hold in place while sewing on handles).

Cut a fourth rectangle out of contrasting fabric, 3" by 50" (you will have to piece it) and iron on interfacing. Press in half and sew down the long edge. Turn tube inside out and press flat. Tuck one end inside the other to form a loop. Make sure it is not twisted and then stitch the ends together. (I think I need a new stick on tap measure!!!)

Fold loop in half to find midpoints and mark with pins. Place loop on bag so that the pins sit on the center line. Pin loop in place. Starting on the outside edge of the loop, sew all the way along one side, up over the handle and back down the other side, up over the handle and back to where you started.
Next, start on the inside edge of the loop sew all the way around that too.

Remove pocket basting.

Fold bag in half right sides together. Sew a tiny seam up both edge. Done!

ok I can totally whip one up and measure, but...in the event you have it handy, what are the finished dimensions? I need a new lunch bag for me and want to size up, but how much do I need to move it?

I'm guessing its about 8"x8.5" (it was 9x9 but then 1/4" seams and side seams took out some)

You did a great job on the sewalong!

Can I add one thing to make sewing the handles easier, b/c I HATE to turn tubse? I got the idea off a craftster tutorial. Cut your handle strips 4 x the width of your finished handle (1" handle = 4" wide strip). Press in half; open; press raw edges to center fold and re-fold. Then topstitch or do whatever you have to do. This eliminates the interfacing, though I think I still would do a lightweight on really thin cotton fabric.

That's exactly how I do all my purse handles, and it's wonderful! It always has just enough body and is nice and crisp.

That's a great sew-along, Scarlet, thanks for posting it. It's going in my favorites, now.
