Yeah. First you put the front part on and wrap it around to the back, tieing the "front ties" in back of you. Then, you put pull the back part up (over the already tied and wrapped "front"), wrap the edges around to the front of you, and tie the "back ties" in the front. Egads, I liked your explanation better. lol!
The sides don't open up and expose you because there's fabric wrapped underneath it. They may open a little at the bottom (like an ankle slit), but that's it.
If that didn't help, jlmk . . . I could take pics of putting them on Rio, step by step, for a better visual explanation.

That helped perfectly! And I got out some fabric earlier and played with wrapping it around myself. Worked for my, but dh thinks I'm weird, lol.
