Also, a number of people have asked about binding or have commented about knit binding being difficult. This is how I do it if only one side is on show... e.g. the neckline of a garment. I do it a different way if both sides can be seen at once.
Its an easy and pretty foolproof way of doing it IMO... especially if you have a serger.
I cut 1 1/8" strips. You can get away with narrower but wider make it much less likely you will miss spots. Also it works as a faux facing and gives a little stability. Any wider and it puckers.
First serge the two right sides together. I stretch the binding just a tiny amount. No stretch can make it wavy, too much can make the fabric curl. If you are not sure how much to stretch, try out on a scrap like I did to figure it out. If you don't have a serger you can do a 1/4" straight stitch seam.
Next, finish the raw edge of the strip. This isn't strictly necessary with knits as they don't fray but I think it gives a nicer look. Plus you can set the differential a tad on curves so the binding doesn't pucker when it is turned.
Flip the binding over the seam to the back. Curl it over the seam. This gives a nice uniform bound edge. Top stitch down from front making sure binding is flat on back and is curled over edge.
