XPOST can you sew? do you have old blankets?

i putting my heart and soul into this cause, before i had only donated some patchy reversible pants and some blankets, it is now my obsession.

http://www.thediaperhyena.com/sewfororphans.htm

can you sew from a pattern? please see the above page for info. i will be receiving the overalls pattern in a couple of weeks and would be happy to make copies and send them out. here is a snippet from the site above:

"What can you do? :: Right now we are working to make available a simple pattern for the one-piece overalls the children in these Ukrainian baby homes wear. As explained earlier, these overalls have 'feet' and simple ties at the top for ease of taking on and off - making caring after the babies and toddlers easier. They do not involve sewing button holes or working with snaps or zippers. The preferable materials for these items are flannel, heavy cotton or lightweight denim to withstand the wear and tear of regular usage and numerous washings by an industrial machine.
Requirements :: This one-size pattern calls for:

1/2 yard if working with 60" fabric and 3/4 yard if 45" fabric.
2.5 yards bias tape (Narrow width is suitable, but wide width is best. Directions included for making your own)
Thread suitable for sewing/serging (cotton suggested)
Flannelette, heavy cotton, lightweight denims suggested. (Natural fabrics are best for moisture absorption and the extreme heat required to meet the laundering regulations - knit and fabric blends are often not suitable.) "

i am also collecting flannel blankets for the orphanage. if you have any old receiving blankets, or flannel fabric, or would like to make some yourself! you can send them to me and i will drive them over to one of the head mamas (she lives only 2 hours away) so they can ship out!

for more info, questions, or for my mailing address email me at:
branwyn@bellsouth.net

thanks for reading this far

editing to add: heather will be putting up a pdf file of the pattern in a few days!!!

This is wonderful, thank you for posting this Branwyn. I'm in once you get the pattern up.

And FYI for any Mamas who are also interested in doing this, I found a bunch of last years holiday flannel in the bargain bonanza at my JoAnn's for $1.88/yd. It is nice THICK and quite soft too. Not the prettiest flannel around but I think it would be soft and warm for these babies and toddlers!

I think this is what I will be using the birthday $ my Grandma just sent me for.

*edited to add--all the bargain flannel I saw was 100% cotton too!*

wonderful!!! thank you so much for posting about the flannel.
i would really like to be able to have all the AW mamas (and MD mamas) send the overalls, fabric, and/or blankets directly to me, heather s. has said that its super cool for me to be the contact for these places. and i can drive them over to heather and kind of "present them" in the name of the boards. FYI the organizations cannot pay for your shipping to us and shipping to the orphanage comes out of our pockets at this time (they are in the midst of setting it up at a non-profit org), they will be setting up a paypal account for those who would like to donate to cover shipping. kim at thebabymarketplace.com accepts monetary donations, as well as food, toys and cloth dipes!

I'm still trying to learn sewing but I DO have a ton of recieving blankets my son never used and flannel is on sale at the Walmart for $1 a yard right now. I will pick some up and ship it off to you. I'll email you once I get the flannel and once the pattern goes up I'm going to try it too. Hopefully THIS will get me sewing.

Okay I just looked on the map and it's like two hours away from me. Ugh, I swear...I live 2-3 hours away from EVERYWHERE!! lol

I have tons of blankets & infant clothing that I can send.
I was skimming through the links, and it just breaks my heart! I think I need to start looking into foreign adoption. Are these children able to be adopted in America?

Branwyn - I can make some and send them your way. Thank you for organizing this. Would it be easier for you if I got a pattern sent straight to me from the company, or get a copy from you?

well heather will have the pattern in a pdf form, on the site, in a few days, so if that works for you then thats great! if not i will be dling it (this way it saves the organization shipping money) and i can make a copy and send it to you. whichever works better for you!
