That's how I do mine. Comes out nice every time. My only question is what do you do with the metal zipping part? My zipper foot always bumps up over it, and it makes the stitching all wonky in that spot. Am I using the zipper foot wrong, or should I be moving the zipper part around while I stitch?

I often do mine the same way. I baste the seam together, but then I use wonder tape to secure the zipper. Its double sided tape that will disappear in the wash So then I don't have to baste the zipper on.

Thank you Bethan, I'll try another one tonight w/ that method Would that work when inserting zips into the back of a dress, for example, too?

This method does work for the backs of dresses, unless it's a lined bodice. Then, you have to either catch the liner in too, or hand stitch the liner against the zipper on the inside.
