New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

First I'm going to extoll the virtues of the simple duvet/comforter cover.

1)tres easy to make a bed, my 5YO could make his own bed at 3! No top sheet or blankets needed, just shake it out and straighten it and the bed is beautiful and made!

2)lots less laundry -- and you know we all love laundry!

Ok this is soooo simple, even simpler than the hat! Pretty quick too.

a) buy material or flat sheets -- make sure to measure your comforter first. Walmart has denim look flat sheets for $3/piece, so you could make this for under $10 easy -- even if you bought ribbon to embellish it! Alternatively buy one flat sheet and one piece of character fabric and use the sheet for the back. PREWASH fabric/sheets

b) (skip this step if you bought sheets) finish edges, either turn over twice and straight stitch or zig zag

c)lay out a sheet or piece of material on the floor. Lay comforter/duvet on top and asses how much extra fabric there is extra. You should have an inch or two extra, but not much more.

d)lift off duvet and lay second piece down right sides together.

e) pin where you need to sew

f) decide which end will have your snaps/velcro etc on (usually the foot of the bed)... fold this side back an inch on both pieces -- this will reinforce the fabric when you put snaps on.

g)sew around other three sides removing pins as you go.

h) lay cover flat on floor and on opening mark about every 8 inches. Apply metal or plastic snaps inches or spots of velcro on mark.

i)reach into duvet cover through the opening and hold the two far corners one in each hand allowing the cover to drape over your arms. Grab your duvet and then shake your arms so the cover falls off your arms onto the duvet. Snap and put on bed!

I think it's a great idea! I'd have to find some cool fabrics on sale though! ;o) I don't have a snap press but this could be even tied with ribbons at the end! or I could use velcro too! ;o) I'm dedicating my weekend to finish my jeans quilt!!! )

You could use metal snap source snaps or plastic sew on snaps or even snap tape. Buttons if you are comfortable with buttonholes, ribbons/ties or velcro. The commercial ones in Britain mostly use the sort of plastic snaps that WAHMs use.

I had to make *something* to cover my white sofa with woman, especially as all my "friends" laugh at me when I tell them that I bought a white sofa.

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

Finally, a sew-along that I'm already ahead with! I've made 2 or 3 of these already. One I made with 2 zippers (couldn't find one long enough, so put the 2 such that they meet in the middle) and they are SUPER! We use them all the time - one's on my bed right now.

I still am collecting fabric for the denim/flannel quilt sew-along. I could never keep up with *all* the sewalongs on this board, but it's still fun reading about them.

Does anyone have a picture of what you are talking about. I am such a visual learner. )
I am sure I would understand better if there was a picture of the finished cover. I would really love to make one and not have to worry about sheets and it would be nice if the kids could make their own beds too. TIA

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

So, you use a duvet INSTEAD of blankets and sheets? We use ours with. But, I love the idea for ds's youth bed. I love duvets! Thanks for your instructions!

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

I am confused (as usual) ...is this a sheet sewed to a comforter and then snapped to a bottom sheet? Does anyone have a pic? I am definately interested in doing this : )

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

this is sewed like a pillow case that goes over your comforter and the snaps are to keep it closed! does that help? )

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

yup! no top sheet or blankets. Makes making a bed a snap (basically all you do is give it a shake and you are done) and nothing to get your legs all wrapped up in.

Jo is right it is like a giant pillowcase for your comforter.

Re: New sew-a-long! (could be good Xmas pressie!)

Scarlet,

As you my know, I turned my nose up on this project when you first presented it.

But times have changed. Ok, ok, I changed my mind?

Now that I want the kids to sleep in their own beds, lol, and now that I'm doing laundry, including sheets, on a more regular basis, I think this is a brilliant idea. (was that the longest sentance in history?)

I whiped up two yesterday. One for J's bed and one for Jules. The only bummer is that Jules comfortor is a twin as opposed to the full that I thought it was [sad]. lol So in our house we have 4 twin down comfortors, a queen and a king and a really sad 30 yo one that needs to be sent to a friend in MT (but that's a different story)

Anyhow, thank you for the idea. This is fun and quick. ) Not was I able to clean the house, bake carrot cake, make 2 comforter covers, but then I was able to host a book club meeting all by 6:30 pm. Can you say "you, go girl"? I was on fire and impressed with myself. Oh, yea I finally finished the last reversable pants too. Had to change the thread color don't you know, or I would still have them sitting there waiting to be done.

Thanks for all the great ideas!!
