Question How do you keep track of where you are in pattern? A story...

I am following a pattern on the back of a yarn skein label...it's tiny print of course...I think it's an easy pattern to follow...but how do you stop and start again and NOT lose your place? I'm leaving myself notes!

Well I forgot to leave myself a note, and I FORGOT where I was in the pattern! I thought I could remember, so I started to knit the row where I thought I should be. I got to the end and had a moment where my stomach dropped, I broke out into a sweat because I felt I may have just knit the wrong row! I pulled it out, got the old stitches back on my needle (twisted in some places...argh!) and proceded to try and figure out where I was on my pattern...and wouldn't you KNOW it I had to go ahead and KNIT the next row ANYWAY!!! I could CRY! When I was trying to figure out where I was originally...the prior row appeared pearled to me (I have beginner eyes). So I made this guess based upon that.

I usually leave myself a note.

Can you take the pattern to a copy machine and blow it up a bit?

Also, get stitch and ***** from the library--she has some great illustrations in there that show the difference between the knit a purled stitches.

Sorry you're having trouble with it. It's a bummer to do all the work and then have to rip it back out.

You also might be able to find the same pattern on the yarn makers website, which would make it even easier to print or enlarge a copy.

You could get a row counter, but that means you ahve to be diligent about clicking/turning it to help you keep track. If you have a printout of the pattern, cross off the rows you've done, or make hatch marks to keep track of your row.

Great ideas...I thought of the row counter...I decided against that because I would forget to use it knowing me. I didn't realize I could get on the yarn maker's sites!

I own all of the Stitch 'n B*tch books...that's how I got an itch to learn to knit again because I came across the book in Menards of all places (like a Home Depot). I actually had the book out trying to figure out if I had knit or purled...and apparently it depends on if you're looking at the front or back of the work? Because I didn't identify the stitches correctly.

Edith Eig (in her book) suggests to write the pattern on flash cards and then flip to where you're at in order to keep track. I thought I could put them on a ring and flip that way in order to keep better track.
