I'm wondering if it really is a good pattern for a beginner. I think it's time I move beyond scarves, dish cloths, and gnomes lol. But I'm a scaredy cat.
Also, my dd wears a size 10/12. But the sweater would be for next fall/winter. So I'm wondering how the sizing runs. I can't decide if I should make her the 10/12, the adult small, or if I should make something in between the two and call it a 14.

that helps actually...thanks! I already have 3 skeins of homespun yarn I bought to make myself a poncho. But then dh made fun of me and I never made it. I'm on this "use what you have on hand" kick. But if it's on the thin side I'll make it bigger so it can be layered. Nothing worse than a thin, tight-fitting sweater.
I started it, but got bored and forgot about it. I was making the adult small. Do they show a schematic? Maybe I could dig it out and measure it for you, but as I recall I was altering it on the fly since I'm sort of short. Plus I think I decided to do the sleeves differently, mostly because I'm one of those people who changes everything -- recipes, curriculum, patterns, my cat's thyroid medicine dosage, *everything*.
The shaping is pretty straightforward. Have you ever worked with Homespun? It's sort of different to work with. It tends to do weird things, at least for me, like try to untwist itself at various rates (this may be a function of how I hold the yarn, though), so I would end up with a glop of the fluffy part , while the thin part is stretched taut.
I started it also and never finished it either. LOL! It still sits in a spot next to my bed about two years later! I wouldn't recommend knitting with Homespun for a new knitter either. How about another Lion brand yarn like wool ease?
Yes, I've worked with homespun many, many times. Mostly crocheting...a few times with knitting. I've been stuck as a beginning knitter for a few years but I've finally gotten fast enough knitting where I am close to my crocheting speed. I couldn't bear a larger project back when I knew I could crochet it in a fraction of the time.
But all you mamas with unfinished sweaters have me thinking it would be wise to start smaller. My yarn is a dk charcoal gray so it will be fine for ds in a 6/8 lol.
But this would be simple to do without a pattern, you just need to size a few swatches first. I say this knowing full well I can knit a sweater, but have trouble following patterns, so I tend not to use them.
The thing is you need someone tiny to give this to!

Monday's are for crafty homeschooling here and Isabelle's working on crocheting now. So I sat with her for a few hours while she worked on her project. It's too late to turn back now lol...I'm 1/3 of the way done with the back. Knitting with a dark color of homespun is dreamy compared to crocheting with it. It's so hard to even see your stitches with crocheting. At least with knitting they're all up on the needle in a nice little row.
