Newbie questions

Ok, first on stupid questions, what are circular needles for?

Now, how do I follow a pattern? It is like another language to me. I don't usually follow sewing patterns, I just use them as a guide. I am more "free-flowing" with my "crafts". Beth and Sam want ponchos and blankets. Blankets are fine (although I have not determined how to make a wide one, I can't cast-on that many stitches) but the poncho patterns have me stumped.

I havent attempted a blanket or poncho yet... I like short quick projects LOL

You would need to use a circular needle for something that large though.

As far as following a pattern, there are abbreviations for each kind of stitch, and as long as you know them, and go one step at a time, its not too hard.

Im sure someone will be able to link you to the abbreviations... I dont have one handy.

some of the basics are

k1 - knit one
p1 - purl one

stockinette stitch - on straight needles, knitting one row, then turning and purling the next - on circulars, just knit all rows

garter stitch - on straight needles, knitting every row

Circular needles are used for projects that you would want to knit a circle, like a hat. But, you can also knit back and forth on them, that's what I do, to make flat projects, like a scarf.

What I did when I was ready to follow a pattern, is found a abbreviation key. Once you figure out what each abbr. means, you're pretty much ready to go. You don't have to learn them all, but the basics.

I think www.knitty.com has a key in their pattern section. Good luck!
