Just started and having a trouble

I am just learning to knit. I am working on a scarf. It is suppose to be 12 (???threads or something) wide. Mine keeps growing. What am I doing wrong? I have 20 (whatever they are called) right now.

Okay, I think I figured that out. Now I have 3 yarn ends instead of 2 and a big hole.

Is the yarn looping over the needle and adding a stitch every time you turn? That's a common cause of extra stitches.

I think something like that was happening. Thank-you. I got that mostly figured out. My scarf is a lot narrower than I would expect it to be and has a big hole at the bottom It is my first project.
