Help with learning to knit

I so want to learn!!! I can't seem to figure out what I need to learn first....I got the slip knot down. Believe me, that was progress. Next I tried to cast on but it mentioned, "knit one stitch" or something. Hello, can't do that. I look for another way to start and they show work already partially finished. I need a "Knitting for Dummies" hold-my-hand-while-I-do-this video/book/picture. Help! Help!

What do I need to learn first?

You need to learn how to cast on before knitting that 1st stitch!

Try looking at the videos here: http://www.fiberartshop.com/knclbg.htm

yep, cast on all the stitches you need first, then knit into them

Do you have a pattern or book that you're looking at? Tell me what it says and I bet we can de-code it for you...

(hugs) and welcome to the addiction!

Those videos are great! THe first instructions I tried to follow had a "knit-on" cast on. It's tight and a total PITB. The long tail method in the video is much much better imo.

The best place to learn how to knit in my opinion is a nursing home or a retirement community because both parties get joy from it! But if you don't want to do that, you could try your local yarn shop.

I have to suggest the book "Stitch n' B*tch". Tami of Tami's Soapworks mentioned it to me and I borrowed it from the local library. I keep renewing it but I need to stop being so cheap and spend the 12$. It's wonderful! Has great knitting patterns and a couple of sewing patterns (knitting tote, needle cases). It does a good job of teaching you how to knit. I also like to watch the videos at Stitch Guide . The videos really do help a lot.

If you can tell me what style of knitting you're using, I may have a few little "beginner's" tips to pass on. I'm using the continental style as opposed to the english style..
