It's a video of one the drs. on the transplant team at Duke giving an interview and video of families in the program on the unit. I thought it was informative....
Click on the link that says Dr. Joanne Kurtzburg (yes, she is always in overalls and very often birks and t-shirts.) She is the first Dr to successfully do CB transplants and travels all over the world teaching and helping establish other programs. She is my hero.

I donated my CB just because they sent me info in the mail about it and I thought it was AWESOME! I couldn't afford to bank (which is ideal) but I always wondered about it and I got chills reading your post knowing that that could've been my dd's CB. I am so thankful that while we live in a world with so much hate and loss, there is still so much love and gain. I am very thankful that your son is in good health. I think promoting CB donation is a wonderful thing, and i appreciate you sharing your story. It makes me feel so good about what I chose to do (or chose for my midwife to do LOL). The kit is free, it's a 2 minute procedure, and it saves lives...what a beautful thing.

What a great sticky! We donated ds's CB and hope that it has been used. Do you know if 100% of donated CB is used?

I wish we had been able to donate DD's CB, but complications at birth prohibited it... Still, we are behind it 100%!

I'm pretty sure it is. I usually have to request it, but I was SO thrilled at my new OB's office when they handed me a pamphlet filled with cordblood info for Cardinal Glennon, I think.

It's an awesome, awesome thing. Period. My baby's first gift to the world.

I went through CBR (Cord Blood Registry) a year ago. My midwife collected it for me (took all of like 5 mins) and it was absolutely free. They sent me a kit that I brought with me to the birth center and that was that. You just have to call CBR when the labor starts or when it's collected, one of the two.

I wish there were more places that people could donate Cord blood but there are very few in the USA. I did donate it with my 2nd child, but the program wasn't happening with my others.
the other thing many people don't understand is that the likelyhood of being able to use your child's own cord blood are quite low. The companies are making millions on a future maybe.

You are right. The cord blood *is* very rarely used for the same child again or even a sibling. I know of many cases where a child was diagnosed with cancer and the parents concieved again, banking the cord blood of the new baby in hope it would be used to save the life of the sick child. This was controversial "way back when" but just seems like common sense to me. Most of the time donated cordblood is matched to an unrelated donor. It does cost money to bank it for yourself, but it is free to donate the cord blood for the use of others. There is now a national registry for cordblood just like for bone marrow. It was signed into law a couple of months ago. Donating is getting easier and easier.
