Question Mamas with kids that own lego sets... Question!

Ds has gotten a few different lego sets and I wondering how you all store yours. Do you just put them all together into one big box and let the kids sort the right pieces out for each project? Or do you put each set into it's own container?

We tried to keep them seperate, but we gave up.
All the pieces go in one big basket now.

We keep ours all in one container with a snap on lid. Trying to keep them seperate just didn't work and he wanted to combine different pieces anyways and who wants to deal with trying to sort them out every evening. I like to just dump them all back in one container, makes for easy cleanup.

AJs all go in one big bucket. Easier to cleanup! He doesn't really re-make any of the sets usually anyway - he likes to make up his own. I only bought a few of the cute little sets and then realized it wasn't worth it. *lol* Although I have considered putting some of the "special" pieces in something different because we end up dumping the entire bucket out and spending quite a while looking for wheels everytime we play...

I really wish people would stop giving my 12 yo the sets. He wants to keep them that way and it just never works out. Causing minor wars between the 6 yo who shares the bedroom.

I also have two containors that slide under the bed. I just wish it would contain them all. Some of them really hurt to step on when the lighting is not that good. They must be jumping out of the box since I am always hearing that "they are all picked up"

*most* of them just all go together, but the really special ones, like the Harry Potter lego sets got their own container.

Hmmm, am I allowed to answer this thread since I don't have any boys but my oldest daughter has a big lego collection?

We have a plastic drawer unit that she uses. She likes this method because she can use one of the drawers to store her creations for a while. Works well for my girl .

My girls have their lego sets in with the general lego. I did have to get a clear flat under the bed box so that they stopped dumping the whole thing looking for "special" pieces though.

LOL! I should have just said "Kids" rather than boys. It's just that I haven't seen any girl lego sets out since 10 years ago, and most of the sets are geared for boys. It's a shame really. I have a huge pink lego house I got over 10 years ago made by "mega bloks" and nowadays I have only seen that company make boy sets (teenage mutant ninja turtles, airplanes, wizards, power rangers, etc...).

Right now we have 5 different power ranger sets and to make each set you need the special pieces made for it. So we have them all seperated into different containers. I do have a huge container of regular brick legos and wheels in the basement too. I'd like to just put them all together since I am sure he will get more sets at the holidays, and I really don't want a whole closet full of stacked lego containers. But I wasn't sure if that would make it hard to put together the special sets. Looks like it is working good for the rest of you to have them all together, so we will probably do that. Thanks!

Well my dd1 is into Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. so the "girl" sets wouldn't appeal to her anyways.

Thanks for the change in the subject line.

LOL I didn't realize people would actually keep them separated into sets. We never make the thing into the picture on the box, when we get a new "set" the first thing we do is look at the cool accessories and dump it all in with the rest of the legos. I usually keep them in a big Rubermaid bin.

And ROTF at the idea of "girl" sets and "boy" sets.

When I was little we had every lego set known to man. Literally. that was about all we had to play with. We had small storage bins made for tools and for bolts and nuts etc, and each peice had its own drawer. It was exesive to a fault. We had a drawer for the "one peices" and for the "two peices" and for the "three peices" and then one for "people" and one for "long peices" etc... it goes on and on. What was strange is that we liked it that way when we started building something... it was easy to see what we were looking for and very easy to do the "I need a two peice to make this wall" and have it be right there. But I had a hard time with taking things down. So most of the time we would spend two days building something, and then leave it made for a month or more because we did not want to take it apart. lol... it was less about putting it all back in the drawers and more about loosing the time we invested into it. My mom is saving them for my little brothers kids. (Who, by the time he has any, my kids will be out of highschool. Never really did understand that... but mom and I don't get along when it comes to stuff... she is a rediculiously organised pack rat... where I am a simplifier. I have a few things that are really well made that I take really good care of. She just has a lot of things.)

My son, who has a three gallon bin full, does not give a hoot about having them organized... so I just let it all go. They are all in one big bin now.

Love Val

Edited to show one more example... you know those little tubes that you place on the form, and put under the iron to make coasters and things? My mom has all of those teeny, tiny tubes in a craft box with drawers, all sorted by color. I have not seen anyone use them in 4 years. But in her office they sit. lol...

We keep ours all together in a couple of big under the bed storage containers and also in a plastic drawer organizer. I have 3 boys and we have TONS of legos. Kathryn likes them already and she's 2 . I saw some Dora duplos and she may be getting some of those for her birthday.

We used to collect them The larger sets are stored in their original boxes, the smaller ones in zip locks - and I have a bunch of the Paradisa ("lego for girls" - pinks and pastels) sets that I may be selling soon.

Oh wait.. the kids lego is what you're asking about, not *ours*

We've got tubs right now... the primo I sent off when they outgrew it (the baby lego).. we've got a tub of animal Duplo sets, a tub of town type Duplo sets (including bob the builder and circus stuff).. we've got a random box downstairs, plus a winnie the pooh set that is in it's original box for some reason

They've got a couple tubs of the smaller lego pieces too for when they're a little older.
