Asheville NC is the closest.

Greenville/Spartanburg isn't too far.

Charlotte is just over an hour.

There is also Atlanta.

i flew into Asheville last year (went thru Charlotte I believe)

yes, this. you connected in charlotte & puddle-jumped to asheville.

really though? i don't know if anyone is coming from the direction where they could pick someone up at raleigh/durham like in the past (xt grabbed wendi there one year when she was headed from DC.) i don't know if anyone is coming from where they could grab someone from charlotte either.

greenville/spartanburg is slightly out of the way of any road-travelers but is DEFINITELY doable with regards to a rental car.

atlanta...coming in the day before the trip & riding up with us would work well. we could sleep a couple mamas here, between my house and xt's house (we're 2 miles apart.) caveat...neither of us has a large vehicle any longer so we'll either be doing a caravan of cars or splitting a large rental (not sure i can afford that but it is an option if some wish to do it...i'll prob still just drive mine up.)

our houses are about 3 1/2h from asheville. it's a nice drive...pretty.

You could always fly in a day or so early and crash here

or stay an extra couple of days.

Tracey - how fast are you guys driving from Charlotte to get there in a hour?!

It takes me 2 hours to drive to Charlotte and I'm about 35m from Asheville so would take me 2hr35m from Asheville. You guys muust be speed demons!

my mom goes a back way that takes her off the interstates that gets her from stanley/denver/lincolnton to hendersonville in just over an hour.

god if i know the road though...74? maybe?

yeah, if she comes across 40 it takes about 2h. taking 85 to 26 and up takes about 2.5h.

i think it's 74 that she takes that cuts through some small towns and is much faster.
