If you or your DH go fishing regularly...

how do you go about catching fish?

Is it complicated? I know it's all about location, time of day, season, bait, and technique has something to do with it - but seriously, my DH has made this new hobby so completely complicated and stressful that it's driving me NUTS. I almost wish he'd give it up. And he might - because he's not catching any fish.

I would say fishing is as complicated or as simple as you want to make it.

Where's he fishing? Or what is he fishing for is maybe the better question.

He may be over-thinking the process or maybe I'm spoiled by our abundance of lakes.

I've caught keepers on canned corn and mini marshmallows. lol.

See - I'd agree with this too. But is CATCHING FISH as simple as you might make it?

I am so completely confident of this! And what stinks is that when he started fishing this past spring, he said that this would be the thing he was relaxed about. He is NOT relaxed about software development (his day job). He overthinks everything to the nth degree when it comes to his music. So fishing was *supposed* to be his laid-back thing...

Around here, there's a few 100-200ish acre lakes, and a few ponds that he'll fish. He will only fish where he can keep the fish - as in - there's plenty of places where he could catch fish but they should not be eaten - and so he won't fish those places. He started out with a basic rod and reel and worms or crickets. Nothing. So he started exploring lures and how to use them. Nothing. And then he spent 75 bucks on a fancy reel. NOTHING. Bobbers, spinners, sinkers, 12 different kinds of hooks, swivels ordered all the way from Israel, 8 different colors of rubber fishing worms and 9 fishing books later.... NOTHING! Now he won't stop talking about buying a boat. drivinmenuts! Yes - *I* know he's making this way too complicated - but the truth is, he's trying really hard to catch fish - catfish or bass are the main catches around here - even bluegill (or brim/bream or whatever you might call them) would be fine - but nothing there either.

I don't get how he can go spend 2 hours, all by himself, out in the beautiful autumn countryside, standing by a gorgeous lake... and come home in a bad mood. I really think he's missing the point - but the truth is, he's been at it since April and basically caught no fish!

If he's not catching fish in one spot, he needs to try another. It's kind of that simple, but I think he needs to discover it on his own.

My dad and gramps were avid fishermen...but totally different in style. SO different that they'd fish the same lake, at the same time, in separate boats. Actually, when I was about 10 grampa kicked me out of his boat and back to dad's boat because i was loud, and "fidgety" and catching fish...and he wasn't. oh my gosh what a fun memory to relive.

So, yeah, your sweets may be trying too hard. But I don't know how you could possibly tell him without him getting grumpier. lmbo. ((hugs))

I've been thinking he may have to discover it on his own too. I've tried to hint at it, but to no avail. He's taking a men's class at church and one of their assignments is to go spend either a full day or a full night - or the maximum amount of time possible - out alone in nature to connect with God. I told him he needed to take a day off of work and spend the whole day fishing. He said that wouldn't work b/c when he's fishing he's very focused and he would need to have a more relaxed mind for this assignment.

I'm like, DUH. Take two poles, bait them and cast them into the lake. Then just sit there and relax your mind. All day long. And see what happens.

Part of me can't blame him though, because he has such little time to do anything, and I'm sure he feels much more pressure to hurry up and catch something.

Awwww. That's not what it's about. So much pressure and God isn't just in the woods or on a lake. I'm gonna go ahead and give huge props for his effort tho...boy, he's really trying.

I "get" the assignment, still, sometimes it's better to go ahead and let the Big Guy carve the time out of your life for you, than it is to pencil him in.

OK, DH is a big fisherman (we live on a lake and he is loving it!). He asked where you live also - that can make a difference.

Fishing rods he likes an uglystick - they are inexpensive and don't break. Usually can get at WalMart.
Shakespeare Fishing Tackle

He and the kids catch perch (same thing as bluegill DH says) in the lake behind our house using bobbers and worms - and small hooks because small fish have small mouths LOL he said get the smallest hook you can find - they will usually bite all the time

For catfish he says use chicken liver on a trouble hook. (3 hooks in one) - catfish you typically catch at night.

For Bass -for a small lake or pond - morning or evening is the best time to catch them.
H&H lures - heck I have even caught fish with these!
Tournament Tackle - Freshwater - H&H Spinner Lures - 3/8OZ Single Spinner
Live bait you can use minnows on a hook with a cork, or even feeder goldfish. Bass will only eat live, moving food. (Or a moving lure, etc.) they will not eat anything dead.

HTH!!!!

Editing to add in - DH and DD2 were fishing tonight. DD caught a sun perch and DH caught a turtle!!!! LOL
Perch almost always will bite - might try to catch those first. Just think SMALL HOOKS!!!!

LOL I always piss the guys off when I fish with them. They get so serious about the cast and all aspects of fishing. I just plunk the bobber into the water and wala a fish.

one of my favorite kid memories is catching sunnies with a bamboo pole and canned corn at the end of my grandpas doc (although he had a feeder not to far also). I also pissed off my BIL because I didnt sit there and stare at my rod when salmon fishing (I was reading a book and tanning) still caught fish tho.... dh came to the conclusion its the estrogen halo attracting them to my rod LOL

I just like being out on the water. if I catch fish its a bonus

oh oh oh take me!

He can re-learn me how to bait a hook, which was something that mighta geeked me out when I was a kid, and I can teach him how to clean it and gut it. There's all kinds of tips depending on if you're fishing in a lake vs river; what you're fishing for, etc.

Say trout, go early morning but it can't be too hot, so where we lived it was get up really *really* early and drive for a while, get to the lake & have breakfast on the boat with coaco (sp?) and fish till idk . . . 10 am maybe?

Certain times of year for certain fish, assuming he has a liscence.

You have no idea what I'd to to have my dad take me. I've begged and pleaded and said that of course I'd get my own liscence and stuff if only he'd take me. No dice

If you're lake fishing, and he doesn't have his own boat, is he fishing from a dock or a rented boat? Are there a lot of ducks there? Those do um . . . something with the fish but I dis-remember. If there's not it's fine too. He should watch what the other fishermen are doing and should be able to chat them up; but that might be a jessica-special-ability. I learned to clean & gut when I was 7. I was **so** proud! I was the youngest kid and totally didn't cry or gross out so I won something, my dad was grinning ear to ear.

For dh himself I might suggest his mp3 player filled with soothing music. Or a little boom-box thing. Soothing for the fishes too. Does he have a tackle box?

My dad and brother both love fishing and ds loves going with them. When my dad had a boat, he had one of those gps fish finder things, lol, it was pretty cool but I don't know if it actually helped us catch more fish.

Anyway, it probably depends on where you live and where he is fishing. When they go out on a boat, they have definitely had a better time of catching, than when they go stand on the edge of a lake.

I think your dh just needs to relax and enjoy his time alone. I know when ds or my brother gets extrememly focused on getting a fish (and don't get one), they come back grumpy, but if they're just there to have a good time, they're so much happier.

Tell him he needs to take up fly fishing. He can learn to tie flies and make his own rods. I grew up fly fishing and it was great.

Oh - don't misunderstand - he gets daily time in with the Big Guy - he's just taking this specific class - a "Mighty Man of God" class and the assignment was to encourage all the guys to get out, clear their heads, and maybe discover something new.

Maybe he's waffling too much between catfish and bass and maybe should just focus on one or the other. We did fish at night once for catfish, but still got nothing. It was kinda fun though!

OMG! - So are you saying y'all have one of these?! At first I was like hmmm... even if it didn't work, he'd sure appreciate a new gadget and the hope of having something new to try - but they're too pricey for this Christmas, for sure!
