open and close your fist ..... thats milk

touch fingers together on one hand and other and then bring them together in the center of you .... thats more

bring fingers to your mouth ... thats eat

make a C with your hand and bring to mouth ... thats drink

take a fist and knock it on your elbow... thats cracker

there are some basics that help a TON imo if you only ended up learning a few

Thanks! I remember some of those from when I used to babysit.

Teach Baby Sign Language - Learn How to Sign with your Baby

This is what we learned from (we got the DVD from the library). My mother is also an interpreter and she taught us a lot. But Joseph Garcia's stuff is a great place to start.

I'm taking sign language right now and use ASLPro.com Home to review. I know they have a "baby sign" section there so check it out!

signing time dvds are really cute and fun for kids -I'd recommend those

I didn't use a particular book. Just get any ASL signing dictionary, or look up the signs online.

I just used common sense signs. I figured that we didn't really need ASL because they wouldn't be trying to communicate with anyone that was hearing impaired when they were infants.
As long as we could be consistent, it would be ok.
It worked great for us.

I got all 4 of the Baby Signing Time DVDs. Anything that wasn't covered in the DVDs I've been looking up here: http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro.cgi

I'd just look up what you need to know on line and see what happens from there. He will learn a few signs, but the words will be coming very soon after that so you won't use the whole book. If you really want the whole book, I have a book called The Joy of Signing that I use to teach signs to my kids at school who are nonverbal. It's clear and easy to follow and has lots of common signs.
The Joy of Signing : Lottie L. Riekehof : ISBN 9780882435206 - Buy.com

The stuff you want Hunter to know: more, eat, please, potty (maybe), milk, drink, cookie(!) or cracker. Really, he won't learn much more than that and then his language will be coming so quickly you won't be able to keep up with what he knows. It's like a flood! Also, many signs will be too complex for his fine motor skills. It's probably no coincidence that the ones we've listed above are the ones that most babies can learn without too much trouble.

Have fun with it! It's amazing to watch their little brains work.

we have Baby Signs but I haven't even cracked it yet. We are using just a few signs that we remember from our two older like: milk, more, please, all done, eat, drink.

You might want to check out a few from your library and see which one you like best.

Yeah! Great suggestion. Our library has The Joy of Signing! You could even copy pages that you want to have at home.

If you want to teach ASL, The Joy of Signing isn't in ASL. There are various methods of sign language ~ so it depends what each individual wants.
