This is what we learned from (we got the DVD from the library). My mother is also an interpreter and she taught us a lot. But Joseph Garcia's stuff is a great place to start.
I can't recommend a specific book, I took some sign in highschool and did have some asl books around but never dove far into them with Caden... he was just happy knowing milk lol eat, more and wouldn't go further
signing time dvds are really cute and fun for kids -I'd recommend those
I just used common sense signs. I figured that we didn't really need ASL because they wouldn't be trying to communicate with anyone that was hearing impaired when they were infants.
As long as we could be consistent, it would be ok.
It worked great for us.

I'd just look up what you need to know on line and see what happens from there. He will learn a few signs, but the words will be coming very soon after that so you won't use the whole book. If you really want the whole book, I have a book called The Joy of Signing that I use to teach signs to my kids at school who are nonverbal. It's clear and easy to follow and has lots of common signs. The Joy of Signing : Lottie L. Riekehof : ISBN 9780882435206 - Buy.com
The stuff you want Hunter to know: more, eat, please, potty (maybe), milk, drink, cookie(!) or cracker. Really, he won't learn much more than that and then his language will be coming so quickly you won't be able to keep up with what he knows. It's like a flood! Also, many signs will be too complex for his fine motor skills. It's probably no coincidence that the ones we've listed above are the ones that most babies can learn without too much trouble.
Have fun with it! It's amazing to watch their little brains work.

we have Baby Signs but I haven't even cracked it yet. We are using just a few signs that we remember from our two older like: milk, more, please, all done, eat, drink.
You might want to check out a few from your library and see which one you like best.

Yeah! Great suggestion. Our library has The Joy of Signing! You could even copy pages that you want to have at home.
