i just talked to my sons school about this concern and was told well you don't know how many people you are already exposing him to in public anyway that have just had the mist w/in the last 21 days so you can't protect him from everything. ugh i see their point but i still worry about his system/lungs. we'll just keep taking precautionary measures here.

they are doing a mass clinic in our county this weekend at a local school. I called the health dept. and everyone who is not under a high risk category will get the mist. Debating on how long to keep the kids home.

What about shedding that's going to happen while out at the store? or other places in the community?

I just don't see how we can totally keep our kids from being exposed to this.

My coworker just went and got her shot. I will be sitting across from her the rest of the week. I have no choice. I think its the same with the kids. We wont' get the shot, we'll get exposed, we may get sick we may not. Its life - we'll deal with it.

Because why would you purposely/knowingly try to infect them? Well not TRY to infect them. What I am trying to say is sending them to school when you know they COULD get infected is the same as letting them play with someone you know IS infected. While we can't keep our children in a bubble- we need to keep them away from potentially dangerous situations. That is the way I see it anyway. I know the virus is everywhere- schools, stores etc.... but I wouldn't knowingly take my child into the store shopping and use someones cart whom I KNEW had the virus. To me there is not much difference.

right but you still go to the store right?

So you go to the store and someone checking out in line behind you just had the spray or the shot - or you get on the bus - or you go to the library - people are goign to have it. everywhere you go. Keeping kids home for the days they're giving the shots/sprays ? it might protect them but soon as you send them back your'e in the same ballgame aren't uyou?

viral load, folks. Viral load.

More particles are not just more particles. As there are more in your system, they increase in virulence. This is why washing out some germs keeps the other germs from really causing havoc.

Plus, inflammation has its own side effects. An enormous range of disease management is just trying to keep inflammation of any kind down. Inflammation can kick off other inflammations, which might not die down.

Also, the misery you go through. The reason you can say " Oh, I didn't get a cold this year" is because you did get the cold, you just didn't hit the peak threshold for obvious misery.

And, finally, exposure. Intimate, in your body, on your membranes direct exposure, causes more problems. There are estimates, for instance, that it takes seven exposures to the HIV virus to come up HIV+. Exposure to a mucus membrane, or an eroded mucus membrane, or an irritated and inflamed mucus membrane, affected the course of the disease. Also, who infected you? Someone with a high viral load, or a light viral load? This didn't affect whether you got it, but it did affect how long it took to go from HIV+ to AIDS.

There's a theory that people only got visible chicken pox once, but received boosters from standing in line next to snotty children- not yet poxed, but on their way. Exposure to a poxed child could kick off shingles.

no, i would not keep mine home.

it's the flu.

i don't understand nor agree with the mass hysteria. i say this having had this variety of flu over the summer.

it's just the flu. it's a nasty one...my throat hurt worse than strep...but it was still JUST the flu.

risk vs benefit to me does not equal quarantine nor vaccine.

There was just a news report about a local school who gave out the flumist, and mistakely gave it to a child who was not supposed to get it. She was immunocompromised already (I can't remember if is was CP she had or something else along those lines) and it made her incredibly sick.. Evidently this school gave it to two different children who weren't supposed to get it

In otherwords.. yeah I would probably keep my child home.

And that's the reason we'll keep the kids home. NOt because we're afraid of the flu - actually already had it, but because I don't want them to make a mistake and have mykids get vaccine reactions to something they didn't need or want. I'm reconsidering vaccines in general - how the more so I wouldn't want them to get avoluntary vaccine for a disease that we've already had.

Yeah, I saw that on the news, one was in MD.

DD#1 had vac's at school on Monday, I told her if they tried to give it to her to walk out and come home, we live 2 blocks away and she is 10. We have never been vaccinated for any flu and this is no different.

they are giving it at the school! that's odd to me. I would keep them home only for the fact that they might accidentally get it against my wish, not for the virus risks. DH and I both work in "germ factorys" so I think they are more likely to get it from us then from school. I am currently suffering from the flu and I'm the only one that is sick so I think they are bound to get it now anyway.

I originally said why keep them home when they'll be exposed anyway - but then found our school is doing the MIST, not just the shots. I have an issue with the mist - purposely exposing them. Guess before when I posted it wasn't in my face and now it is.

I talked to my kids about making sure they do NOT get either and how to tell them to call their mother but we do not do vaccines because we don't believe they are safe or effective. Zoey loved that phrase. However I'm really leaning toward just keeping them home with a call to the RN at school stating why we are keeping them home. Will debate further with my husband in a few hours when they wake up.

So I guess my first reaction here was just not how I truly feel and am bumping this because I really am considering keeping them home now that the choice is really mine to make and I'm not just guessing on how I'd feel.

Our school is doing the mist on December 2nd. I'm considering keeping my kids home. Of course, Rob and I both work that day, so I'd need to pay a sitter. And my kids would miss out on a day of education. It pisses me off that schools are mixing with health care decisions.

And, because it's the mist, it will have to be redone a month or so later. So, that's two days out for us. I'm not a happy mama.
