Boy mamas, what do you think? I almost choked when they said "nine"...I was thinking, "oh yea, I think Brice should have it" and before I could get that thought through my brain they say NINE!
So? I selective vaxed Branden (and he HATES shots period, but is more open when he understands WHY)...I see the importance for girls and then I'm thinking how many girls won't get it and I would like my sons protected as well. Okay with that said...HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS TO A CHILD AS YOUNG AS NINE? We've had the sex talk...but not the disease talk. I didn't follow the thread for girls on this subject (should have probably).

I have to say that I am skeptical of the vacinne and my 16 year old dd has never had it. I don't know its longterm effects of people. I want more info to come out.
I am actually considering getting it so I don't need to worry about certain strains in my future.
50% of people in the population get the virus eventually.
I used to have one of the HPV viruses and both my ds's had warts on their faces as toddlers/young boys. They finally cleared. I wondered if they got the virus during birth.
HPV was once thought to be lifetime but now they know a body eventually can smack it down and get rid of it. Yay. I test negative nowadays.

I also tested negative...my gyne suggested I get tested so then I wouldn't have to get annual pap smears. I would go to every three years. Problem is I can REMEMBER to get one every year, but heck I can't remember now if I was tested two years ago or ??? So that is a downside for me.
I am very skeptical of needing vaxes for everything (chickenpox for example, now they need TWO because the first one isn't a lifetime immunity as they thought it would be - and then they think kids also need the shingles vax too - so that's become this freakin' out of control thing IMO).
I do think this vax is a good idea & has good intentions just because we don't always KNOW when our kids will have had sex or if they do wait they don't always know who their partner has been with.
Currently living with 3 of the 4 strains the vaccine is supposed to protect you from, I'm going to watch and see, and probably have both my kids get it when the time comes.
I don't want them living with going through cervical cancer, and the shame and horror of living with genital warts. It's about self esteem and quality of life.
and dang I'm against vaccines.

I don't know how I feel about the vac - but I can tell you that the statement about the kids being old enough to have sex means they are old enough to decide on whether or not to have the vac is false. Kids do not have a sense of mortality nor long term vision until WAY after they start having sex.

fwiw, they do not test for the version of HPV that causes warts as it is not linked to cervical cancer. So, one can actually be HPV+ for strains other than they test. I cannot remember which ones are the ones that are linked to warts vs. the ones that are linked to cervical cancer.

"Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said until him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And, the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments have all the law and the prophets."
Actually, "Gardasil is a vaccine against the HPV or Human Papillomavirus. The Gardasil vaccine protects recipients against 4 types of HPV, including the two types that cause most cervical cancers and the two types that cause the most genital warts."
But it is true that there are other types of HPV that cause genital warts which Gardasil does not prevent. So, getting the vaccine will not protect you against all forms of genital warts.
My issue with Gardasil is that there seems to be a pattern of autoimmune disorders as a reaction to the vaccine. It isn't firmly established at this point. But given the low rate of death from cervical cancer, it seems too early in the life of this vaccine to give it to children.

No, I'm not saying that it isn't stated that it protects against the kind that causes warts (I know little about the vaccine as it isn't something in our world yet), but that when one gets a pap and they test you (now routinely) for HPV, the TEST doesn't test for all strains, just the ones that cause cancer (i.e., the test doesn't test for the strains that cause warts, so having had warts and testing negative to the HPV test does not mean that one no longer has the HPV virus that causes warts).
Heidi,
You do not need to test for HPV to have less paps. If you have always tested negative you can go every 3 years. I have been in a monogamous relationship for 21 years, never had a positive pap. Based on that I have my paps every 3 years.

I was in an absolutely monogamous relationship for 10+ years, never tested positive until the 9th year. I can guarantee that my ex was absolutely monogamous too. So I don't know. Got HPV strain18 along the way, did i catch it at the hospital when I gave birth to my second? That's honestly all I can think of.
Nope I won't get it for my boys. When they are old enough to have sex, then they can decide for themselves if they want to have it.
This is my thought as well. We talk openly about sex with our kids, and hey know that diseases are an issue. Right now, I can't imagine getting any of my kids vaxed for this.

I agree...sadly I've seen what GW can do...people even get them in their throat and have to have surgery to remove them (like vocal cords)...I also know a couple of people who've had cervical cancer.
