As far as homemade sanitizer, here is a recipe:
Natural Hand Sanitizer | Pepper Paints

My only concern is this article that says for it to be effective, it must have 60% alcohol:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/21/health/21cons.html
I found the same articles. The wipe I sent in with her today contains Purified water, Lavender, Chamomile and Sage Essential oils, and TTO.

I tried to research the reviews to see if that would be sufficient to kill things like H1N1, but couldn't find anything to back it up.

There is a child in the school with Leukemia, and they are trying to keep any exposure down for him.

The teacher helped DD open her wipe, and didn't give her the HS. For her to take an individually wrapped wipe everyday is more waste than I would like, so I have to decide which is worse.

I will see about making my own and putting it in a spray bottle, I don't know if they would allow that.

As far a Clorox wipes, they give me a headache, and I don't think they should use them around the children.

We don't allow the girls to use hand sanitizers. I don't care if someone says they are easier. Maya and Lily can go into the bathroom and wash their hands if they are really dirty. and if they don't, then their bodies will just be getting cozy with some non-super germs.

The school nurse knows I am not one to screw around after I made her call the state and let me tell them on my own that we won't vaccinate the girls The damn nurse thought she would call my bluff.

Just go in and talk to the teacher and request your child wash hands instead of using the instant stuff.

I moved to 2nd grade this year but I did teach kindergarten last year and I was happy to deal with reasonable requests from parents that were somewhat along those lines. (or it was about lotion)

Why the hand sanitizer in general? I blame the huge push for teachers to fit in too much in one school day. Any way we can shave off a few minutes to allow for a few more minutes of instruction adds up over the course of a year. (yes, sadly even at the kindergarten level....you'd not believe the pressure we teachers are under from the powers that be and also by many parents...probably not parents who post here at Amity's. lol)

Anyway, longwinded.

Just talk to your childs teacher and request your child wash with soap and water. It really should not be a problem at all if there is a sink in the room. I split my kindergartners between three handwashing/cleaning options before lunch to save time.....basically going off parent preference. (some parents wanted the instant hand sanitizer!!! and I had different soap at the other two sink areas. lol)

I can't imagine a teacher asking a child to use any kind of clorox wipe or any kind of cleaner to clean their desk!

Last year in kindergarten (I taught that level but am at 2nd grade this year), I made my own cleaner from Dr. B's, distilled H2O, and some tea tree oil and I was the one who cleaned their tables off AFTER they left at the end of the day.

This year, I use a non-homemade cleaner just because I can not afford to provide the one I made last year. However, I do the cleaning after the students leave for the day.

We do have instant sanitizer that we use, as well as traditional handwashing throughout the day.

Forgot to thank those who posted the links for making your own instant sanitizer.....I make all my own cleaning products and have two children who are high risk immune system (as well as myself).....I think I'll make up that sanitizer for them to use instead of the other store-bought stuff.

I asked my boys. They say they always wash after the bathroom (good!) and mostly wash before lunch, but sometimes they use the hand sanitizer. Erik says it's when they run out of time to wash hands.
