ok so what is the deal with Obama, I have to know.
Yes, I get it, people don't like George Bush. people are afraid that McCain would have been another bush. But what is so great about Obama. All I can see about him is that he is charasmatic and tells people that he is pro this and anti that. What exactly is it about him, besides the fact that he's not george bush, that people love so much.
I am obviously not thrilled with our nations choice, but as an american I do respect and accept the fact that he will be our new president. But please help me understand why I should.

First of all, he is MY president. He is the first president I will have had that represents MY generation and MY life experience. That is huge for me.
He is bright, compassionate, inspiring, personable (which I think DOES count for a whole lot - we need our president to be able to have a good working relationship with other world leaders), and represents my values and ideals.

"Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said until him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And, the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments have all the law and the prophets."

yeah, that.
He's human. He's real. He's one of us. He is hope.

How do you know he is all of those things? From the tv interviews? From in person rallies (and if so, how many have you attended)?
I'm one that thinks we see what the politicians want us to see. Whether or not he actually is what you see is something that will have to be determined. Unless any of us have spent days, weeks, months, seeing them on a personal basis, at home, at work, in other aspects of their life, we can't be sure they are any of the things we think they are from tv.
I think this way about all of the candidates. While I did pick one to vote for, I didn't stand so strongly behind them because I know that I really don't know them, or anything about the person they really are. So while I'll happily watch the election, I won't be cheering or jumping for joy when one wins, whether it is the candidate I picked or not.
It seems odd to me to see so many people so adamantly for someone they may never have met and barely know. I don't understand the tears and excitement everyone seems to have right now.
I mean no snark or offense by asking. I just don't understand the huge hype.
I think what I'm having trouble understanding is why the tears? Really? I'm not trying to be snarky, just trying to understand what about this man creates tears. I am not crying that McCain didn't win, kwim. I guess i'm really put off by the whole celebrity issue

I think the tears are about the fact that America has broken the walls of racism. Proud night for all of us and hope for our children's generation.
I think for many of us, the tears have to do with history changing and walls being torn down. That is worth crying about.

Seriously? Even IF he wasn't all of the things Rebecca said he was (and I believe he is), we as a country, a country that has a seriously checkered past when it comes to racial equality, has just elected a black man named Barack Obama to be our next president, only a few generations after the end of the civil rights movement, only a few generations from a time when a black man couldn't use the same bathroom that a white man could. My parents went to segregated schools, *I* grew up in a time where a interracial relationship could get a brick thrown through a window (ask me how I know). And now, we have spoken as a people and elected a black man president. IF FOR NOTHING ELSE, THAT brings tears to *my* eyes.
I have great hope for our nation now. I was a fan of Obama from the beginning. I think he has amazing potential to take this country in a direction that I want to see it go in. That said, I know there are others who disagree with the direction I see and hope for and I can certainly understand that. But even if he had been a Republican, even then I might have shed a few tears of happiness for the milestones we have crossed tonight.
