Honestly I think voting for or against someone due to race is just stupid. Who fricking cares? It just so shouldn't matter but I've heard many people straight up say that they voted for him solely based on race. Dumb.
Well, not everyone who voted FOR obama, voted strickly on race, however, I am sure that has happened in the past for Race, Religion, skin color or whatever. ONe party voters abound. Not just Black ones.

That said, I wonder which percentage was larger: the percentage that voted for him because of his race or the percentage that voted for McCain because of Obama's race?
I agree.

So eloquently stated.

For the immediate, he is the man that I believe can mend a nation and open the arms of the world.

I would agree with this for people who actually voted simply on skin color. However, there is nothing wrongwith celbrating the fact that he is THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!first, because it is a friggin big deal. I preferred him over Hillary,. and let me tell you how much I want a woman president in office.

Again, there are *plenty* of one issue voters on both sides. Lame, yes, but not unique to Obama.

I know several Christians IRL who voted for Obama. As far as I know there are only two of us families in our church though. But outside of my own church I know more.

I didn't care either way - but I find it amazing that we have someone who was born prior to the civil rights act who has just been declared the president-elect!
course, I wish I felt some of that hope y'all feel... I'm just not getting that. Wouldn't have it with McCain either though, so I'm not feeling any different than I thought I'd be as far as all that goes.
I was *very* impressed with McCain's speech - very classy.
I'm so very glad it's over and we can get on with our lives.
and I'm dying to know who will be governor here, and it's neck and neck.
How do you know he is all of those things? From the tv interviews? From in person rallies (and if so, how many have you attended)?
I'm one that thinks we see what the politicians want us to see. Whether or not he actually is what you see is something that will have to be determined. Unless any of us have spent days, weeks, months, seeing them on a personal basis, at home, at work, in other aspects of their life, we can't be sure they are any of the things we think they are from tv.
I think this way about all of the candidates. While I did pick one to vote for, I didn't stand so strongly behind them because I know that I really don't know them, or anything about the person they really are. So while I'll happily watch the election, I won't be cheering or jumping for joy when one wins, whether it is the candidate I picked or not.
It seems odd to me to see so many people so adamantly for someone they may never have met and barely know. I don't understand the tears and excitement everyone seems to have right now.
I mean no snark or offense by asking. I just don't understand the huge hype.
I agree with this. charisma is one thing - understanding his views are another.

I would never vote based on race - i don't care if the person running is purple with polka-dots.

but that's a different thread. Just trying to wrap my brain around this whole thing.
you are not alone. i'm also frightened.

So, you asked why people are so excited about him, I'm respectfully and compassionately asking what it is about him that scares you so much.
I'm petrified about how he's going to deal with foreign powers. In particular, how he's going to deal with the Middle East. What happens there is going to affect us. i am truly scared.
I'm also very concerned about his views on keeping our country safe - but that rolls back into the above.
Lastly, i want to be excited too - like everyone else, I'm well aware that we have made history tonight by electing an African-American into the presidency. That makes me very excited about being where we are today. however, i didn't vote based on color - and he was not my choice.
I sincerely hope that President-elect Obama lives up to everyone's hopes and dreams and makes this the best presidential term ever with outstanding results.

believe what you want to believe. Don't what you don't. Devalue that which I believe. Doesn't matter to me. I'm high with pride and excitement and enthusiasm. I have NEVER been so impressed/enthused/proud of any president I've ever had in my adult life.
Anyone could say what they want. Anyone can try to take away the joy I feel right now by suggesting that I've been deluded or had the wool pulled over my eyes. That's your (as in "one") belief and it does nothing to take away my joy.
I"m staying in joy and I"m not debating (which is not an indication that I could not stand up for my beliefs - I certain can do so ).
Peace mamas. This is a great day. We will be a better country for having this man as our president. Nothing can take that away from me now.
bravo
good night!
and
GO OBAMA!!!

I am a Christian as is my family and we (most of us) voted for Obama!
I can only answer for myself. I voted for Obama for many reasons... first, I agree with his stand on the issues and that is the biggest reason he was my choice. We need health care coverage for our children, we need to roll back the tax cuts for the wealthiest persons, we need to insure that Roe vs Wade remains, we need to stop the economic bleeding in Iraq, we need a leader who believes in working for our environment, etc. However, there is a reason that I believe many voted for him... hope. They want someone who brings them a beacon of hope for change in a time when so many are losing jobs and homes, when so many choose between medicine and food, when so many are losing someone they love in Iraq. Obama is that beacon. He is dynamic, well-spoken and inspires hope in so many people. He is a uniter.
As far as him being black, I bawled like a baby when they called the election. I didn't vote for him because he is black, but I felt overwhelmed to know that anyone can now tell their children, "yes, you can be president when you grow up." We have finally broken down that wall for all children to come. It is a milestone that was too long in coming and my heart is smiling.

I would hope that ANY president elect would live up to his platform and our hopes and dreams. ANY.
So I agree.
It is still a monumental day.
Historical. Hopeful.
Yes, it is well known that Obama writes most of his own speeches.
In a political climate where it's almost unheard of to own the words you're speaking, I've always been amazed and thrilled that Barack Obama consistantly wrote or at least cowrote much of his public speech.
Our President-elect is eloquent, well-educated, and intelligent. Something about that makes me unbelievably happy.
