Had nothing to do with why I voted for McCain either but it bothers me quite a bit that it was *the* factor for some people either way. Lame.

The whole "celebrity" thing is a McCain-introduced thought. Is it such a bad thing that the Pres be someone people genuinely like?

Apparently you are only reading what you want to hear. We have all made it very clear that race was not the reason we voted for him, but that iut is a big deal because of the profound moment in our country's history that it is. It is an added bonus, not the reason he was elected.

If a person could be elected based on race, Obama was NOT the first black candidate... None of the others made it far enough to be nominated.

That says something about this man's qualifications. Race was NOT the big issue, but, now, it is! Because he just made history.

DH is a registered republican and a christian and he voted for Obama. We generally don't talk too much about politics and I was proud when he told me, just last week, that he had done his research and decided that Obama would get his vote.

I'm not talking about anyone here although I found it interesting that race was mentioned right off the bat. I'm talking about people I've heard IRL who were very very clear about the fact that they were voting because of race. I've got pretty good hearing.

No, that is not what I am asking you. You didn't say that you heard people saying that they were voting for Obama just because he is black. You said you heard people talking about being excited that a black man was going to be President. Those are two very very different things.

I would never vote for somebody based on the color of their skin, nor would I support anyone else doing so.

It's the NOT voting for somebody because of the color of their skin that really bothers me though.
