Seriously? Even IF he wasn't all of the things Rebecca said he was (and I believe he is), we as a country, a country that has a seriously checkered past when it comes to racial equality, has just elected a black man named Barack Obama to be our next president, only a few generations after the end of the civil rights movement, only a few generations from a time when a black man couldn't use the same bathroom that a white man could. My parents went to segregated schools, *I* grew up in a time where a interracial relationship could get a brick thrown through a window (ask me how I know). And now, we have spoken as a people and elected a black man president. IF FOR NOTHING ELSE, THAT brings tears to *my* eyes.
I have great hope for our nation now. I was a fan of Obama from the beginning. I think he has amazing potential to take this country in a direction that I want to see it go in. That said, I know there are others who disagree with the direction I see and hope for and I can certainly understand that. But even if he had been a Republican, even then I might have shed a few tears of happiness for the milestones we have crossed tonight.
nak..but that was written perfectly. I have had my tires slashed, I lost my family for over a year, my children have been called nasty names, have come home from school crying, etc. This IS a big deal to me. It gives me hope for my children's future.

"Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said until him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And, the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments have all the law and the prophets."
So, here's the thing: you know how you just don't understand why people are so passionate about him? Many of us probably have a hard time connecting with how you could be fearful about the future for your family and your rights under him.
So, you asked why people are so excited about him, I'm respectfully and compassionately asking what it is about him that scares you so much.
I am worried about the impact this will have on my religious freedoms and practices. They have been under attack for a while now and I am fearful that this administration will cause problems for people with similar beliefs as me.
His race had NOTHING to do with either why I voted for him or for why I'm so proud of him right now.
That said, I wonder which percentage was larger: the percentage that voted for him because of his race or the percentage that voted for McCain because of Obama's race?
I couldn't have said it better myself. Not only race, but even his name and his muslim associations. Even McCain alluded to that in recent commercials here in MO. I know MO is a swing state that could have gone either way so they were campaigning extra hard here and getting extra nasty there towards the end but still, discrimination based on race is just icky. I'm glad things are swinging in another direction.

how are your beliefs and practices being interfered with by the government that you would be concerned about this?
I am extremely religious and my dh is becoming more observant and I have noticed no interfering in our religious practices.

Charlotte, I wish I could understand, but I don't. So, not to be nosy, but are you Christian? If so, how are your religious freedoms and practices at risk?
Every time I post a question, someone else has already asked it.

I cannot imagine that an Obama presidency would have an impact on YOUR religious freedoms and practices. I can see how you might have concerns that they would also give freedom to practices with which you disagree, but they cannot take away your freedoms (they just won't enforce them on others).
Honestly I think voting for or against someone due to race is just stupid. Who fricking cares? It just so shouldn't matter but I've heard many people straight up say that they voted for him solely based on race. Dumb.
I haven't heard that, either. His race had nothing to do with why I voted for him.
That said, I do understand why his being elected is so meaningful for many. Do you realize that in many areas it was impossible for an African American to have his/her vote count for anything? It wasn't until Johnson signed the Right to Vote act in 1965 that the rights of AA people to vote became legally protected.
Forty-three years is not a long time. There are many people who were there to fight in the Civil Rights Movement for their basic human rights who just saw their mission come full circle.
Race didn't factor into my vote but I can certainly appreciate the magnitude of what many just experienced.

Can you tell us what you fear specifically? I don't know what your religion is. Personally I think religion is TOO prevelant in Politics, especially Christianity.

Did that make sense at all?
I'm sure that they will allow those practices, and really, I don't have a problem with most of them. I am very pro life but some of the other ethical/moral issues don't really upset me one way or the other. I am fearful of legislations that will turn things I say/do/feel into "hate crimes" or cause my pastor or other spiritual leaders to be afraid to speak. That's just one of the big issues for me. I'm still kind of thinking on this and am getting really sleepy LOL

I am a christian.
Race was not a factor for me in this election at all, just wanted to make that clear.
I really do not think that will happen. But, I can understand that you would have that fear. I think that it has been used unfairly as a tactic by some churches to get their members activated to vote. I will fight for your rights to practice YOUR beliefs for you and yours as much as I would fight for religious freedom (and freedom from religion) for all.
