Well, I think if you're going to look at it as a "we don't really know anyone who is campaigning" issue then why vote at all? I did as much researching as I could and came to conclusions based on a little bit of heart mixed with a little bit of head and I just like the guy. As an American I did the best I could.
I'm not crying but I think this is an emotional time for many people. It's a pretty big deal for Obama to have won, regardless of what you feel politically.
Charlotte, this has been discussed a lot on the boards in recent times. There are many reasons to support Barack Obama. I support him because I agree with his policies and his platform.
Why did I cry? Probably because it's the first election that I've really been invested in. But I cry at commercials, I cried when I read Frindle to Erik. I cry when things hit me just right. So you know, it's not that odd.
I think for many of us, the tears have to do with history changing and walls being torn down. That is worth crying about.
Yes, this election is going to change our country for the better, because we needed to "tear down that wall"!!
And, yes, politicians are politicians, they all say what they think you want to hear. Obama is far from perfect. Personally, I think he's a bit arrogant and I disagree with many of his issues. But, I agree with enough to believe he'll make the better president.

Honestly I think voting for or against someone due to race is just stupid. Who fricking cares? It just so shouldn't matter but I've heard many people straight up say that they voted for him solely based on race. Dumb.

I have not heard anybody say this... All I have heard (and, not much thankfully) is the opposite.

I ususally avoid the political threads. But I know in this election nothing that would have been written about him would have changed my vote. I guess that's why I didn't read them. I have a completely different belief system than him and I am honestly afraid of what is going to happen to my family in the future and our rights.
but that's a different thread. Just trying to wrap my brain around this whole thing.

I grew up in germany on american army bases in the 90's and how I feel today is how I felt the day the berlin wall fell. It is about hope and freedom. It is about future and a new outlook. The day the berlin wall fell the emotion was felt throughout the country and was extremely powerful within to the point that I still feel that way when I touch the large piece of the wall I keep on my mantel that I personally chopped out of the berlin wall. I am extremely patriotic and LOVE my country and this excites me beyond any comprehension!!!

And, sure, we can say that we don't really know him, but, you know, we've seen him a whole lot. He's had cameras and reporters in every aspect of his life. I'm sure we've seen a whole lot more of him than he might have liked. I'd think that if this were all a front, we would have had the opportunity to have observed that by now.
But, not only did our country break a huge racial barrier, but we did so with a really inspiring, compassionate, bright, personable man (or at least as he has consistently shown for the past four years with the cameras on in and the reporters in his business) whom I'd be as proud to have as my president were he white, black, latino, asian, middle eastern, or female. It just happens to be extra special that it is so monumental.
The republicans have had their turn for eight years. I'm thinking that they haven't done a great job. I'm not so sure why more people aren't willing to try something different. It is time for a change.

"Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said until him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And, the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments have all the law and the prophets."

I think the people who have been hated and beaten and spit on and murdered probably do.

His race had NOTHING to do with either why I voted for him or for why I'm so proud of him right now.
That said, I wonder which percentage was larger: the percentage that voted for him because of his race or the percentage that voted for McCain because of Obama's race?

So, here's the thing: you know how you just don't understand why people are so passionate about him? Many of us probably have a hard time connecting with how you could be fearful about the future for your family and your rights under him.
So, you asked why people are so excited about him, I'm respectfully and compassionately asking what it is about him that scares you so much.

I didn't vote for him because he's black. I voted for him because he's an awesome guy. But a marvelous "side effect" is that we now have a role model like none we've had before.
