Absolutely. I always believe in doing my civic duty as an American citizen. I also happen to be extremely patriotic.

Carter,

as much as I love him, was not into 'reaching across the aisle' and was extremely stubborn when it came to his ideal of politics vs. the reality. I don't believe Obama will have that problem.

I did not mean to be offensive on asking if people did vote. I just picked up a vibe that there were some that were talking that did not even vote.

Just sayin, it is real important to make your voice known at the polls. That counts more than here at Amity's on your stand for what you beleive in.
That's all.

And bravo to all who voted on both sides. I am so proud of the mama's that did, and that I did. The world needs us to be a voice.
No offense was meant if I upset anyone by the question asked.

I know they watched the elections, but nothing was ever explained or discussed with us. We were never asked to sit with them and watch history.
I hope that my boys remember this day for the rest of their lives.

BTW, I'm 32 this month.
Thank you for sharing this.

I have not read through this thread and NEVER post in political threads. But I figured I'd ring in a bit. I think many citizens feel they can relate to him in some way that they've never been able to relate to a president before. Either his relative youth, his "citizen of the world" status the press gives him, his single mom, grandparents, half sister, his bi-racial background. For me, I have roots in Hawaii, which is a unique culture to grow up in. I am bi-racial, though not black. I lived in other countries growing up, which gives you an appreciation for this nation, but a realistic view, as well. People have found something in common with this man, even me. I'm just sharing with you what I can find in common with him, though I'll only tell you that politically I'm an independent and not reveal who I voted for! This is me taking a step back and trying to see why this man is so popular, as the OP asked.

People vote for similarities. They often vote for "their own." I lived in AR when Clinton was running. Some Arkansans voted for him just because he was a native son and not for where he stood on issues. "Their own" used to be white males. The demographics are changing and this past election has really reflected that. A woman, a hispanic, a bi-racial candidate....

I guess you're talking to me. No, I didn't vote - but I'm not sure why that matters. Like I said, I wouldn't have voted for either McCain or Obama so... I'm still entitled to my opinion. I don't think I've said anything here that I shouldn't say because I didn't vote.

But whatever, I'll go back to shutting up now.

Here's the deal...I've been hearing for the last 8 years that it's unpatriotic to criticize the President, even on such epic fails as the occupation in Iraq. Think the people saying that will back Barack no matter what, too???

I will. He's my President, whether I voted or would have voted for him. End of story.

That was one of THE most horrid things about the last eight years. Anyone who critized the president was made to feel like a traitor to their country.

I do not think that will happen once Bush is gone. I don't think it would have continued had McCain won either. I think we finally see how wrong that was. So, yes, if Obama does things I don't like (and I'm sure he will, eight years is a long time) I will complain and whine and possibly call him names.

It feels good to have my freedom of speech back!

Maybe it's the circles I hang with, but I've found the opposite. Just read any thread about anything political, here at Amity's, and count how many people who express support for ANYTHING Bush has done, and then count how many people rip that person to shreds for it. There's a REASON I participate in political threads so little around here.

Can "people" get more than one day to get over their disappointment before they get admonished to grow up?

I honestly think everyone is handling it quite well. *shrug*
