...reminded your children when and how to call 911? For those whose kids do not use cell phones, it is a good idea to show them how to turn them on and dial the number as well.
...had a fire drill in your home and reviewed "Stop Drop and Roll"?
We did those today and it was a good reminder for Kaya. We play acted that I had passed out in the bathroom and was unresponsive. Then I played the 911 operator and asked her the usual questions that they asked. She did well with everything including remembering the home address.
Just a little reminder...

i often think about this. like how the heck could i get ds to get help if we needed it up here and i could not do it. we don't have a phone. and the road is about 3 miles for him to get down to a neighboor. i guess i need to teach him out to send out an email or post in a forum we need help! in spring hopefully we will work out the whole phone thing. but until then.... iworry about it. especially being a preggo mama with asthma. not that i think anything will happen... but you never know i guess....
nope, no cell service yet. we are working on it htough. we bought ayagi antenna and forestry phone...and unicel said it would pick up a signal from pico ( a local mountain with a tower) and it didn't. argh. but we are working on a booster for the antenna, but no one wants to come up to install it for us until spring cause of all the snow and it needs to go on the roof.
with dh's heart condition, tucker and griff know how and when to call 911 and tucker knows cpr as well.
we do fire & emergency drills every few months as well.
We have always made sure the kids know how to do it (which is really fun when your kid gets mad that you wont let them do somehting & they decide to call 911 on you ) - now we have to do it yearly for our foster license. Complete fire drill & all. we also have to have an escape plan w/phone #s & such posted - very thorough & a good idea!

Hey Allison - just wanted to let you know - I'm on Wildblue's cheapest package, just downloaded Skype and tried it. So far I just tried leaving a voicemail for someone. But it worked! Very clear, not much delay if any. So that might be something to try for emergencies. I just used my laptop mic but if you don't have one built in you can get a headset or even a Skype phone!
I'm very excited. I was told it would not work at all but well - it definitely does! Certainly well enough for emergencies or even just phone calls to/from doctor's offices etc.

Emma, my super-worrier, reminds me about this stuff all the time. She needs to practice things like calling 911, getting out of the house, etc, fairly often in order to feel safe. She is constantly figuring things out - like if the fire's at the front of the house, she'll go down the back stairs and into the alley and get help. That's the most recent example.
She does have a list of numbers that she is allowed to call and answer at anytime (minus the 911 number - not an anytime thing). She does freeze before actually talking on the phone, so we practice.
She was right beside me when I called 911 a year ago when John had a seizure while nursing. She remembers that well and was very attentive. Once everything was OK (ambulance on the way, etc), the 911 operator asked to speak to Emma and explained everything that was happening and how important it is to call for help if you need it.
Emma also knows that it's OK to go outside and just YELL if she needs help! She knows to yell something like "My Mommy is hurt and I need a grown up" over and over until someone comes.
Now, John, I'm not so sure how that will go. He's just 3 and we haven't done a lot of training, I admit. But he's so casual and not at all worried that I fear he'll be laid back to a fault.

My biggest thing for my kids, at this age, is that they remember phone numbers. We use cells exclusively, which means we NEVER have to remember numbers, cause we just find the name, and hit send. It's pretty bad. We do a bit of reminding, and spot checking, just to keep their hand in.

Allison, try it again, from an article that I read earlier today (it was me that Lauren was experimenting with lol), there was a period of time that skype didnt work with wildblue, but it seems that it may be remedied? I cant find my headset right now, but you are welcome to leave my dh a voicemail (thats what lauren did) as a test-- he is spartacusroosevelt

weird it works for you cause we have wildblue, the pro pack which is the highest one you can get!
oh man! I was all excited for you. I thought at least that would relieve the worry of getting through to someone in an emergency.
Meant to post before to also say, thanks for the reminder Meeshi. Going to go over protocols w/my 9 yo again, though she is very savvy and level-headed...J knows nothing of this yet...maybe something for the IEP next year.
Thank you for the reminder!
A few days ago we had a long talk and demonstration for Leah about how to get out of her room if she gets stuckin there during a fire or earthquake. We have the big old Sash windows with locks that she cannot reach herself...
We need to go over the numbers again.
She knows stop drop and roll and earthquake prepardenss from school. But, we went over that all again as well. It is different at home.
