what a pompous ass. "human beings have evolved past the need for pain". i guess native americans were primitive and ignorant in seeking vision quests too...didn't they realize they could have just done some lab-created acid and gotten the same effect?
I couldn't even bear to finish it. That is just rediculous. It makes me so angry, I just want to........GRRRRRRR!

"If anything, reliance on pain to create meaning during childbirth indicates a constricted imagination."
Methinks HE is the one suffering from a constricted imagination. He can't imagine why anyone "wants" their pain. He can't imagine that maybe it isn't the pain that they want, or the ego boost that he thinks they get from having an unmedicated birth. In his "agnostic disbelief", he is totally overlooking that there IS in fact a spiritual aspect to our existence (which I believe is actually the far greater part of our existence), which is the perhaps inexpressible reason why most women who choose it, choose unmedicated birth.
Was this in the op-ed section, or the regular part of the paper?
or maybe us dumb women just can't quite get it through our thick skulls that pain relief DOESN'T have ANY effect on our birth outcomes, or our experience of it, or our babes' health. but boy he tries hard to convince us just how much it doesn't affect ANY of those! we're just a superstitious lot who love our pain...medieval wenches if you will.
You know what really pisses me off? When men think they have any expertise in terms of what it is like to delivery a baby and whether or not women should or should not use pain medication. Until a man grows himself a uterus, they need to shut their mouth as to the proper way to do any birthing.

i particularly like the part where he talked with ina may. oh and where he discussed natural childbirth classes and said they misinform women about obstetrical anesthesia methods...warning them of things like increased rates of fever and cesarean birth...how is it misinforming women of these things when the obstetrical journals themselves discuss them and the statistics that prove them?
sorry...i've never met a man who has given birth. it worked beautifully for women for millenia until the last 500 years when men have decided amongst themselves that we women are incapable of handling it on our own. we must be "rescued" from our own inferior biology that obviously doesn't function adequately on it's own. what the flip ever.
i don't take the word of any male (or female) physician affiliated with western medicine when it comes to childbirth...not when we have one of the highest rates of maternal/child mortality in the "civilized" world. until they figure out how to get THAT rate down (hello...leave us the hell alone and quit "offering" stuff to help a process that works well enough on it's own and that creates iatrogenic issues) i really have very little respect for the profession.
give me a midwife with a pair of gentle hands and a doula with a calm heart over any obstetrician...any day.
