has been interesting. There are 5 of us in a 2 br apartment. It's a big apartment, but it's still half the size of our old house and the house we rented last year.
Frankly, I'm loving it. It's easy to clean. Easy to keep organized. Easy to keep up with the laundry when it's not down a flight of stairs.
My sister has also pointed out that we only have half our stuff here. I don't miss anything, except maybe the tent, because I need it in a few weeks, but I'm just going to borrow one.
So my suspicions that I'd like a smaller house: confirmed.
We lived for 6 months with bil/sil when we moved her. It was actually nice to be paired down to the basics. Now that I am packing things for our move it is actually easier to clean and keep things picked up. I don't know that I want to live in a smaller house. Dh works at home and since we homeschool too sometimes it feels like we are on top of one another. But I do like keeping the clutter down.

We have 4 people in a 900 sq ft 2 bed, 1 bath apt and I love it. I really think purchases over and love the convenience of being able to plug the vacuum into 1 outlet and reaching every corner of the apt. I can't ever see us in a bigger place. When we get a house it'll be small as well.
we just about killed each other in the 900 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath apt we lived in. Of course, the fact that it was damp, dark and had low ceilings didn't help anything..

yeah, we're lucky with this apt! It has 10 ft ceilings and lots of windows, plus we're on the ground floor in the back, so the kids can run around outside, and I can watch.

We're back in Georgia. This apartment is maybe 3 miles from our old house (and walking distance from the building where DH worked when we moved up this way)! It's a temporary stop while we house shop and get the job situation squared away.
Location: Is she smart, so well-read Are there books, are there novels by her bed? And is she the sort that you've always said Could satisfy your head?
I think ours had 7 ft ceilings.. we had grass outside and were ground floor, but we were at the bottom of a hill, completely shaded by trees, buildings and said hill. We lived there for 5 months and the grass NEVER dried out. Not even in the dry summer season.
my dad walked in and said "oh my gracious this is horrible. I'm having a panic attack it's so claustrophobic in here.. I'll wait outside".
Location: firmly planted in the postmodern pastoral economy

We are in 640 sf plus the loft (about 4x18ft where you can stand, the rest is steep eaves right down to the floor, no walls whatsoever) and I gotta say, I can't wait to add on. Not much though. But all winter we're piled on top of each other like crazy. It was good for 2 years though. I just am desperate for a bit more space and privacy.
I do like how easy it is to pick up and clean, and how simple we keep the possessions. For example, I have not had one bit of temptation to get one of those sandwich makers. Nowhere to put it. But dh does love to cook and I love to bake, and the lack of work space in the kitchen is getting old.
I'd like to be around 1200-1500 sf total. Not huge, but not eensy like now.

I think 1200-1500 sounds about perfect. I'd like 3 br, maybe 4. 1.5 baths.
The kids have the master bath here. They barely use it at all - not even the toilet. So what's the point of that 80 sq ft? The apartment is huge for a 2 br, actually, at 1100+ sq ft. The space could be portioned out better for us, but it's good.
I really like our big house (right around 2000-2200 sq ft), but the key is not filling it up with possessions, for sure. I have to prune a lot, and keep it minimal. I could do a small house, too, but with young kids they really do like to run around a lot.
I'm glad that it confirmed what you thought--it's good to know that without the commitment of the mortgage, for sure!

We just moved from a 1300 sq. ft house to a 4000 sq. ft house. We are just renting this one while we find the house we want to buy. Let me tell you, it is SOOO much to clean. Not to mention the 2.5 acres that takes 2.5 hours to mow TWICE a week. Very much regretting the decision to rent this house, but we are stuck here until April. I think when we purchase, I would be happy with 1800-2000 sq. ft.

Oh and we left most of what we had behind, in our detached garage of the house we own in Oklahoma. I'm loving this minimal stuff and thinking I can let go of most of what we left behind!
