CSA shares

Are they worth it? I looked it up locally and it would be $400 for one share for veggies from May-October. Would it be cheaper for me to just go the the Farmer's market weekly and stock up on what I want? It would seems like I'd still have to go to the farmer's market anyway and I wouldn't have to drive each week to go pick up my share (It would be about an hour round trip)

Just don't know what to do.

It depends so much on your area. In Western MA I pay $425 for a May-Oct share and it's a great value. You do still need to get other things to fill in your 'favorites' but I usually feel like the value we have gotten is about double the amount each week as if I had paid for individual things... plus I forces me to be creative in my meal planning! ( I get stagnant with my veggie choices)

We pay 425 for the may-oct season. b/c there are so many ppl in my town that take oart in the CSA - then we only have to make a trip to the farm once a yr at the most to pick up all the goodies and we distribute them at the local park. The farmer also comes to our town and when he does he brings our shares - that is once a month. Thus we do not have to worry abotu the time and gas costs.

also it is a security for us. we know that we willhave fresh food in our fridgepantry all year long (a winter share is 95). some weeks we will even get extras from what I am told.

I really do think it is worth it even if it might be a little more than what I would pay at teh grocery store.

It's worth it to me. We pay $294 for 13 weeks, I don't know how that compares to yours. I actually found that my grocery spending went slightly down when getting the boxes, because I don't get produce as much at the grocery store (like, when I'm there just grabbing what htey have). I get a box once a week, and we go to the produce store once a week. Ideally I guess we'd get the box on Wed and go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday, but we can't always do that.

Also, my CSA is local (obviously) and organic. SO it's way less than I'd pay for organic in the grocery stores. But 1 box a week isn't enough for my family of fruit and vegetable lovers, so we do have to supplement. I have thought about getting two boxes, but haven't done that yet.

I am anxious to try this, I just need to confirm the pick up place, to see how far it would be mileage wise.

Thanks!!!

We pay $400 for our share and it runs from May-end of October. I feel it is a great value.

I love ours. Would be doing it again this year but we are focusing on expanding the garden. I will still visit them at the farmer's market weekly to fill in but we hope to grow most of our own veggies this year. If you don't plan to do that, I would absolutely say it's a great value and a great way to support local agriculture.
