Ugh!

We are in the area hit by the ice storm in Oklahoma. Our power went out Saturday night. It came on for a couple of hours Sunday night and then was off until this afternoon. I had made a huge Sam's trip last week, and Aldi's opened in our town and I had made a big stock up there also. I just threw away a big garbage bag of food. All my berries I had picked and froze last summer...
I'm thankful though, I have a deep freeze in the garage that is fine, and I saved some things, eggs, butter etc, in the cold garage.
Did I mention the day before this happened my 9yr old came down with the flu, 104 temp and all. I'm thankful no one else has gotten sick! We have gas logs in the fireplace so we all have camped on the living room floor to stay warm at night. I caved last night after listening to the flu-child cry that he was cold and tried to get a hotel, but they were all full.
I'm so glad to be warm and have power again that the $$ loss of food hasn't really hit me yet. I bought a few basics but I'm not going to replace things till I'm sure it's back on for real. Do you think all the jellies, etc are good? I kept them all but feel uncertain.
Sorry for rambling, I just needed to vent it
Anne

Awe mama... my only advice is when we lost our power for 5 days due to a storm last winter, my homeowners insurance covered the cost of replacing everything inside my fridge, deep freeze and little top freezer. My claim was $1400 !

That is great advice! I am so sorry you had to deal with this... and with sick babies too. Yikes! {{{hugs}}} I hope all is safe and you can claim this stuff on your insurance. I am pretty sure the jams and jellies will be ok. Were they all freezer jam? Did you put them in the garage as well?

So sorry. Losing all that food is so hard.

We lost power for 5 days a couple of years ago after an ice storm. I buried all our food in snow (in a rubbermaid container first, on our porch). But I'm guessing you didn't have snow, just ice.

I think the jams/jellies would be good.

Yes, no snow, just a thick layer of ice. Though now we are supposed to get four inches of snow tonight! (I know it doesn't sound like much but that's a lot for us in OK
We've never lost power for more than a day, if I had been proactive from the beginning I'm sure I could have saved more stuff...
Dh has a friend that works for our insurance company in claims and he's going to ask him about filing, but we have a $500 deductable so unless they waive that in some way I don't think it will help. There's still many people without power, it's just terrible. Thanks for the sympathy
