Dang it all. Now I really do have to buy a new stove.
Sure, the stovetop's burners are all working. That I can fix, huh? But now the oven ignitor's gone bad, and it's the kind of oven that I can't light with the aim n flame as needed. At this point, the piece of crap isn't worth the money I'd be throwing at it, so I'm shopping tomorrow - seeing as how we have 2 parties here this weekend.
I need to bake Patrick's birthday cake, cupcakes, etc for Friday. My niece is visiting, and I'd like to cook for her. And we're throwing a little goodbye shindig for Jodi and her peeps. I think being able to bake is pretty much a necessity by, say, Thursday.
So the sinking fund for the home is getting more use. I'm glad it's there. This has been very educational for me. Turns out having money saved for a fairly specific purpose is kind of nice.
check sears! We bought one there last week that was a discontinued model, regular 825 for 550. Nice mid level gas, black, seamless grate on the top so you can slide your pots .

Check Craigslist though! So many people are redoing their kitchens to stainless and getting rid of appliances that are nearly new for a fraction of what they'd cost new.

Good luck! I can imagine how good it must feel to have the sinking funds. We've had some unexpected expenses lately and I've been scrambling to keep things covered so I don't bounce checks. Stressful!!!
Seconding the rec to check craigslist or local sources for used appliances. We got a very functional and awesome 4 yo stainless and black range for $200 out of the trader, with that cool grate for sliding your pots (I love that)...$50 for the dishwasher, $25 for the micro/hood combo (those were older, about 10 years old). They were redoing their kitchen. Also the propane oven was too slow for her and she wanted electric. I don't mind and wanted propane oven.
We have also had luck with Sears scratch and dent. And herc's range sounds like an awesome buy!!

I checked craigslist, and there's one I'll probably call about before I shop at stores, but, honestly, most of them want prices at which I could just about get a decent new range. I see good prices on decent condition appliances all the time, just not the week I need one.
Marina, I do know what's wrong in this case (I'm a fixitnow.com junkie). When the range was much newer, I had the same part replaced. The repairman said the ignitors go in these models every 4 years or so, and we're having the same symptoms this time. I checked to make sure, and yup. I know how much the repair cost then, and I know how much the part is if I want to tackle it myself. It's pretty much not going to happen.
There is a local thrift store that frequently gets in nice looking appliances. I'm going to ask if they test them, and see what they have on hand.
Heather - do you happen to have a model number? The Sears is close. Most of my appliances are from the Sears Outlet, but I'm willing to see what new appliances are like in a pinch.
Have fun shopping. HOw nice to have your fund readily available. Good for you.
thanks for the fixit links. I'm going to check that out for my mil. Her fridge suddenly stopped cooling but the freezer half is functioning properly. weird. With any luck we can save her a few bucks.

BTDT as you know...it sucks buying a new one. Make sure you have a new connector thingy for your gas line, you are not supposed to reuse the old one. Also it is $$$ to have it installed here in GA...if you are comfy hooking up the gas lines then I would suggest you skip the installation charges.
Good luck finding a good deal!!

I didn't know that about the line. I'll do it. Seems like a good idea to replace it every 10 years, anyway, huh? I move the stove a couple times a year to clean, and I'm sure it can't last forever that way.
I'm cool with hooking up the stove. We did the dryer. For some reason, I won't do the gas logs, though. I think it's because I don't have instructions. I like instructions.
So I think I'll get the one at Home Depot, but I still need to call the Sears Outlet to see what they can do (I liked a couple of models, but, of course, the one I wanted to buy was out of stock at the warehouse), and check craigslist one more time.
I'm surprised how nice they can be for $500 or so. They have sealed burners, a simmer burner and a high BTU burner, and even self cleaning ovens. Really, that's all I need. The pot resting place is nice, and I'm trying to decide how much that one on clearance at Sears with that feature tempts me. It's stainless, though, and everything else in my kitchen (except the black fridge) is white.
