Good article. I'm always amazed at how much people I know upgrade their lifestyles as their salaries improve, but I don't notice an overall happiness increase.
DH read a book he keeps telling me to read - Stumbling On Happiness - and he said the author made some of the same points. So glad he finally read something I've been saying all along.
