Little Triumphs

Let's post things we've done to be frugal that were a little harder to do, but make us proud of ourselves!

For example, we're replacing our kitchen cabinets and of course it took way longer than we thought. But each meal I've tried to provide from home (no kitchen sink, just using a microwave and toaster in the living room which is packed with appliances and furniture) feels like a victory to me. I know that even if we just had takeout I'm saving probably $20-30 each time. Yesterday we were out all day (because it's not very safe for the kids at home right now) and I already had my pizza order in my head to call in, and I got a hold of myself and we went home and had pancakes and scrambled eggs for supper instead (because my stove was finally back in place.)

I make all our household cleaners. Saves a lot of $ and saves on the environment.

We also never eat out. We make use of our cooler. We do this often, especially right now for example....our high school son is in basketball and we are at games a couple times a week and we always take a cooler with our meal(s) in it. We also travel for medical needs often. I do the same thing with the cooler.

Those are the two big ones I can think of that take more time but save a good deal.

We used most of our tax return to nearly pay off our car debt- only three more payments.

I rode the bus today to the library. (I will ride the bus with my boys to go places instead of getting a second car.)

I hung most of my clothes to dry instead of turning on the dryer.

It's nice to see what others are doing.

I'm reading the tightwad gazette right now (from the library of course! LOL). In some ways some of the stuff seems a ridiculous amount of work for very little return, but most of it makes alot of sense. We almost always have a choice to spend money or not. Those little things do add up, and it's the mindset of frugality that I think most of us are missing.

Eating lunch at home today, even though we are crazy busy and stressed getting ready for our trip, and I really didn't want to eat at home.

Doing a good inventory and buying as little as possible for our trip, rather than just buying new clothes because we are going on a trip.

Hmmm, I don't feel very triumphant right now.

I stayed home all day. I know that's not much of a victory, but the school had a professional day (kids home) and I usually go places to keep everyone entertained. But we've been so busy and stressed out lately it was fabulous to just lie around and play at home. So I saved gas, didn't buy anything, and got laundry done. I need to make a goal to have more home days!

And I filed my taxes yesterday and we will be getting a refund that will really help pay down debt. I'm excited about that too.
