Question If you were going to stock up on food..

and you had $300 to stock up (knowing the next few months might be "lean" ones), what would you get? Hmm, and we're (intending to be) vegan, but just put what you would get, lol.

I have a Sam's club membership which really helps. If you are intending to be vegetarian, get lots of beans and rice. You can make tacos with them and beans and rice together is a complete protein. Lettuce is expensive so you can omit that...you could also make spanish rice.
I would stock up on noodles, potatoes, carrots, and frozen veggies. Also onions for flavor, soup stock or boullion cubes, buy bread to freeze or make bread. Crackers, cheese.
Is that for 1 month or several?

I would buy ingredieants (sp) like:
big bag or two of yeast
wheat berries (if I had a grinder because ww flour goes rancid so fast
lots of dry and canned beans
canned tomato products
lots of spices to vary the flavors of the basic meal stuff

We are already vegetarian, we're cutting out dairy/soy substitutes now too. We have a Costco membership, I think we'll get a lot of beans and rice and marinara sauce...and canned & frozen fruit..

That's tough. We eat 99% vegan (honey very occasionally and sashimi about once a month), but our main focus is on fresh fruits and veggies. I'd get these in bulk:

brown rice
pinto beans
kidney beans
garbanzo beans
hard white wheat berries
soft white wheat berries
dried corn or cornmeal
yeast
some sort of dry sweetener (we've been using date sugar)
maple syrup
organic frozen strawberries and peaches
organic frozen green beans
organic frozen spinach
frozen mango chunks
raw nuts
organic raisins
organic veggie broth in 32 oz. aseptic containers

For just a few months i would buy small bottles of olive oil, because we hardly use it at all.

Earth Balance for the boys.
Soy sauce/tamari/Bragg's
canned pineapple in pineapple juice (for fruit emergencies)
canned sliced black olives
salsa (we'd need jars and jars)
gomasio
a couple of jars of crushed garlic
Real Salt
Real Salt Seasoned Salt (for DH)
Curry powder
baking powder
baking soda
egg replacer

That's all I can think of for now.

For my meat-eating family I'd get ground beef, frozen peas/corn, big sacks of rice, flour (for pancakes and bread, pizza, etc.), chicken legs, whole salmon (although we usually get it for free from fishing friends,) canned tomatoes for pasta/pizza/stews/soups/etc., oats, potatoes, onions, garlic, cabbage, carrots, eggs. Get canned fruit at the dollar store! Don't forget the other expensive stuff like laundry soap and stuff too.

Grains and legumes above all else -- (brown rice, hulled barley, split peas, chickpeas, lentils, beans, millet, quinona (keenwah-- I always forget how to spell the real word. lol etc). A combination of canned and bulk. (Freeze the bulk for 24 hours so kill any buggie larve--otherwise all your grains could be ruined. Almost any bulk grains, flours etc harbour buggies).

Canned protein (if you eat any meat--salmon, tuna etc)

Flours (freeze first) Whole wheat, unbleached white, whole wheat pastry, cornmeal, maybe spelt.

Yeast

Tamari

Tahini

Rolled oats (freeze first)

Onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, squashes-- keep separate and cool.

Variety of frozen greens-- broc, kale, spinach etc

Nut butters, esp Almond.

A few frozen turkeys or chicken if one eats meat.

Tempeh and/or tofu to freeze

Well, in our long-term food storage right now, we have wheat berries, black beans, pinto beans, lentils, brown rice, oats, dried apple slices, peanut butter, large cans of crushed tomatoes (we use them for marinara, chili, etc - more versatile that way), canned veggies (peas & green beans mostly, IIRC), potato pearls (yummy instant potatoes), a can of tuna (we don't really eat it, so I put it down in the basement), sprouting mix, and pasta. I have a little more coming soon. Since we have a grinder, I ordered popcorn, which can also be ground for cornmeal.

These things largely reflect what's going on in the pantry and fridge, only we have a much wider variety of fruits and veggies in the fridge and freezer of course.

if i were not shopping organic and had to shop locally, meaning no coops, i would invest ina sams or costco membership.
at sams you can get bulk
2lbs yeast 3.00
25lbs bread flour 5.00
10lbs sugar 5.00
spices-- whatever you use a lot of
80oz peanut butter 6.00
jelly/honey/maple syrup
grits
oatmeal
tea or coffee if i had caffeine addicts
128oz applesauce 4.00
100oz cans of vegetables-- these are abt 2-3.00 each and you can break them down into portions and freeze. Especially great for tomato sauces-- these are only 1.50-2.00.
100oz chicken broth if you eat meat 4.00-- you can also get bullion instead, and its cheaper, jsut higher in sodium
eggs-- usually good for at least a month, and can be mixed up and frozen in quiches and such
5lbs sour cream 5.00
5lbs cottage cheese 5.00
6lb bag mixed fruit or strawberries(frozen) 7.00
whatever meat my family ate
5lb broccoli or mixed vegs (frozen) 5.00
30lbs french fries 12.00
whatever condiments i used a lot of-- these can be very cheap at sams
2L olive oil 15.00
5 quarts canola oil 6.00
20lbs basmati 10.00 or if i was trying to really conseve, 50lbs long grain 10.00
1gal italian dressing (can be used for marinades or whatever) 5.00
64oz pace salsa 4.00
produce-- i would buy at sams-- biggest bags i could find and preshed or dice or whatever, and freeze
6lbs spaghetti 3.00
5lbs egg noodles 4.00
6lbs penne 3.00
pinto beans-- i believe it is pintos sams carries dried
butter
cheddar cheese 5lbs 10.00
mozzarella 5lbs 10.00
cream cheese (prob not for everyone, but we eat a lot of it)
potatoes
onion
carrots
celery
we buy frozen pizza dough by the case sometimes at sams-- it isnt as cheap as making it yourself, but is great for a day when you know you will be busy-- just take it out of the freezer and pop it in the fridge

at the regular grocery i would buy
corn tortillas-- you can fry these and make tostadas, chips, whatever, and they are SUPER cheap and last forever.
cheap dried fruit
popcorn-- just the bags of it, not micro-- MUCH cheaper, and a great snack
any dried bean my family would eat
barley-- great grain to stretch a soup further
corn meal

at big lots or dollar stores i would check for sauces, canned goods, seasonings, condiments, and snack food-- i find organic all the time. I always keep lots of canned beans and tomato paste/crushed tomatoes/diced tomatoes on hand.

these are pretty much things that i try and keep on hand at all times. i supplement this with fresh items of course-- usually shop for more perishable items once a week. But basically, I would find a good pantry list online (i have seen several), and go by it. IMO if you arent picky about organic, then sams is a good place for staples. I typically buy either there or through a coop. baby up-- need to run!

I buy my staples once a month from a co-op. I get:

frozen greenbeans organic
frozen mixed veggies, organic
veggie mixes w/ broccoli
frozen juice
2-3 frozen organic pizzas or other quick meal for emergencies
canned tomatoes
chicken broth

Most of this stuff is organic, I get fresh produce weekly at the store
