X-Post Homemeade play dough: alum vs cream of tartar

I have a recipe for play dough that calls for cream of tartar (from the TWG) but I've looked up other recipes and they call for alum. Has anyone made their own play dough? What did you use-alum or cream of tartar? Which one yields better results?

Thank you for any input!

Here's one from www.motherspirit.net that uses neither (and Allison/arasmama wrote it). We like to use this one -- no cooking needed.

Sorry I can't speak to your question! Just thought I would share our favorite playdough recipe.

I use cream of tartar recipe. It works great. Last long too(as long as it's stored in ziploc when not in use.) My kids love it. They also use it at school.

I've made both the cream of tartar and the alum recipes, and IMO the cream of tartar stays softer and smoother much longer.

We use creme of tartar. My mom made it for me as a kid. We tried the no cook, but don't like it as much, find it very grainy.

I just made some this week with my kids and they loved it. It's not gritty/grainy at all, and it's a nice smooth texture. I made some a little thicker than others, and all turned out wonderfully.

1C flour
1/2 c salt
2 pkgs koolaid
1 c boiling water
2 Tbsp oil

And my table looks nice and shiny after they play with it, too... I think that's the oil.
