What cc company gives the best rewards?

I am thinking about getting a card that gives rewards and using it for everything and then paying it off everymonth, I completely trust myself but I am not sure what type of rewards I would want. We don't really fly much so that doesn't make sense. My IL's do one through GM and love it, I would consider that if someone who makes hybrid cars offered such a thing. REI offers 1% back. Is that good? Is anybody else better?
I would love some imput.
TIA.

we have discover that gives 1% back. I like it because you can choose to have that in cash or to get more in gift certificates. The ones I especially like are $20 cash back award for a $25 Bed bath and beyond gift certificate or my current fave-- $20 cash back award for a $40 cooking.com gift certificate.

I have a Bank of America Alaska Airlines Visa - it's the first rewards card I've ever qualified for! LOL I get air miles on it, I think - reminds me I need to check that and make sure I'm getting credit for them!

But the card Jenn has sounds awesome!!

Just read the fine print on the cash back ones. Many of them only give the full 1% back if you carry a balance or once you have charged a large amount. IF you read the bold print on the discover card site the usual text is "up to X%".

FWIW, we have a Costco AMEX that gets the most use. We also have a YahooVisa that earns yahoopoints (that can be turned into gift certificates and such - DH is the money manager, so he knows the details of the cards).

for discover we've never carried a balance and we get 1% cash back. What you get up to is if you choose to get the gift certificates-- you get up to double on your reward. It used to be double on everything, but now a lot of them have changed to $25 for $20 instead of $40 for $20.

That is what we use too. We actually use the miles though. With dh and I both owning our own businesses, we use the CC a ton and just pay off each month. We are able to earn a free ticket every 2 - 3 months. I just used 2 to go to Arizona last month and I already have 2 more.
