Mamas with MultiplesDo you do double or triple duty through every baby stage? Having multiples has its own parenting difficulties- especially when you are trying to parent gently and naturally... please share your thoughts and questions here in your special multiples forum
Yes -- if they're in the same amniotic sac then there are a bunch of risks involved, too.
If they're in the same GESTATIONAL sac, then they're still identical, but they may split at an earlier stage and may still develop separate amniotic sacs. This is actually relatively common. Problem here is that this kind of twin often shares the same placenta and other issues may develop.
There are always more risks in identical twins than in fraternal twins -- but there are still *plenty* of successful identical twin pregnancies

Cheryl, yep. Here is what I posted on another board. Sorry I'm going to c&p it here instead of typing it again. OMG it is me. I am so scared. I went for a us yesterday because I knew I was pg but have had lots of cramping and bleeding so my dr wanted to do a us just to make sure all was ok. Last week I had a dream that I was pg with twin boys.
So yesterday at my us they had the screen turned away from me because the tech was training someone. She said she would do measurements and then turn it towards me. So she is measureing and explaining stuff and I kept telling dh to make sure there is only one. So he says will you verify there is only one so she will calm down.
So the tech looks around and starts laughing and says you won't believe this but there are two!
She hadn't really ever done many twins so she kept measruing and forgetting to save the info as baby A and baby B, so it took awhile. And she really didn't explain much and I am only 11 or so weeks. But it looked to me like they are just in one big area.
I am so scared after reading the link someone posted at AW.
I am going to call my Dr tomorrow and see what she has to say!
Oh no! no! Don't be scared! The separating membrane is almost impossible to see. They have to catch the "light" just right.
Chances are that your twins have their own amniotic sacs (edited to fix that. I meant amniotic, not gestational here.)
Congratulations!
Really -- it's VERY hard to see the separating membrane -- by 11 weeks with my twins they appeared to be having a blast bouncing off of each other -- they appeared to be interacting, taking swats, etc -- but they did have their own amniotic sacs (they did share a GESTATIONAL sac -- and a placenta -- but they were safely in their own bag). Statistically, it's very unlikely they share the same amniotic sac.
I could NEVER (and I had over twenty-two ultrasounds while pg with the twins due to my cervical cerclage) see the separating membrane unless the u/s tec was there TRYING to find the membrane to check it and could show me the tiny filament of a line. It would flash in and out of visibility like a kite string catching the sun.

THANKS!!!!! This makes me feel so much better!
Mindi
I have no clue, but omgosh Mindi! Congratulations!!! I should have known when you said that to me the other day about the clothes! LOL
I'd go check out the Fertility Friend multiples board and they have another multiples board that they'll recommend you to that is great for this kind of thing.
The membrane is really, really hard to see in monochronic/diamniotic twins (what mine where). It took about forever when they did the anmio because they had such a hard time finding on the ultrasound where the membrane was and that was with the latest/greatest equipment at BC Chidren's hospital and high level perinatolgists when I was 20 weeks. Monoamniotic twins do happen - but I think 11 weeks might be a little early to tell for sure.
For twin pregnancy support try the expecting forum at
