Cover crops?

Anyone use cover cropping? What do you plant and why/where?

Just learning a bit via reading and am curious to hear others' experiences. I might want to sow a cover crop this fall in about a 40x80 area that will be our expanded garden next spring, and I'm not sure what would be best to plant.

I've only done a little bit, but was pleased with the results and plan to do more. A few years ago I planted winter rye and hairy vetch. That grew pretty well. I don't till, so I cut it down and planted transplants through it. I did have to keep trimming the vetch, so I'm not sure I'll use it again. Last year I planted medic as a living mulch. That's been working well, and not crowding anything out. I'm going to try the same thing with white dutch clover. I just planted a cover crop of buckwheat a few days ago in the bed we had just moved the chicken tractor out of. I'll cut that in a few weeks when I'm getting ready to plant in it-probably brussels sprouts or storage tomatoes. I also want to try oats, because they will winter-kill and then you're left with a nicely mulched bed in the spring.

Cool - thanks! I have a bad infestation of galinsoga and am wondering what I can plant this fall so it doesn't come back next spring...
