Zone 5 fall gardening?

At what point would I plant fall crops? I lack confidence in the whole fall gardening thing, as it seems always to go from sweltering to freezing around here with no in between. Any tips for me?

Both zones 5 and 6 are in my immediate vicinity. I can't tell by looking at a national map EXACTLY which one I am in, but I don't know if it matters that much. Looking at another map, it appears I am actually in zone 5b--which means lows of -10 to -15.

Last year we moved in July, so all the gardening I did was in the late summer-fall. I didn't grow much, but we had a few peas, radishes, etc. Garlic gets planted in the fall. Territorial seeds has catalog that comes out this time of year for fall planting. I don't order from them much anymore because they (like most seed companies) get seeds from Semimis, which is Monsanto, but their catalog is full of useful info and I might order some non-seed items (garlic, multiplier onions) from them.

First find your approximate first frost date:
Avant-Gardening: Creative Organic Gardening Hardiness Zone Map of the United States of America

then follow the planting guide:
Fall planting schedule by Heirloom Seeds

Then say a prayer that all your following of tables and guides goes according to plan LOL

I am zone 5 here too. I am planning on planting peas and lettuce around the beginning of Aug. for fall. I really have to find a place to plant these though. I have never done this before so it is an adventure for me.

Me too. I'm very excited. I have broccoli plants started and will likely do some snap peas and lettuces. I have cleared a spot, but haven't put anything in yet. We have a serious mole problem, so we're betting they would devour carrots...Might try them anyway. I have some radish seeds too. When I clear out the tomato plants, I am thinking I will plant some wheat or oats for "green manure" (and just 'cause it's fun to see stuff grow, LOL).
