sunflowers? should i companion plant them?

i am considering planting some with my zucchini, cukes and tomatoes. i read that they are ok for bush beans and peas but not the pole varieties...

what are your experiences?

i am also thinking about propagating some of my basil to grow in with my tomatoes and then some of the other herbs to grow in and amongst the veggies. what has been your experience with that?

what i am growing:

VEGGIES
left bed:
lemon cukes
bush cukes
tomatoes
yellow bells
red bells
sweet chilis
jalapenos
mexibells
pole beans
bush beans

right bed:
eggplant
peas
zucchini
cilantro
spinach and salad greens (not doing so well bc of the heat...will redo in fall)
onion starts

i am open to moving some things from one bed to the other since my greens aren't doing so well. whatever i move from the left bed to the right needs to be ok with onions in the soil.

i'll be planting some marigolds i've sprouted throughout both beds tomorrow and then sowing more marigold seeds (since they tend to be shallow-rooted, from what i understand, they should not interfere with the veggie crops.)

OFF TO THE SIDE
watermelon
BIG pumpkins

HERBS
chamomile
sweet basil
valerian
cilantro
lemon balm
echinacea (double coneflower)
chocolate peppermint mint

(elsewhere i have a TON of rosemary, lavender and wormwood...i am considering propagating some of those to grow around my veggies.)
