I have some beautiful coleus plants that I picked up and planted last week. I seem to remember that you can grow new plants from the clippings.

Just for kicks I clipped a branch and set it in a cup of water to see if it will grow roots.

Any experienced mamas know if there is more to it??

Yeah, coleus are kind of tricky though...if you can get some of that growth hormone stuff to make the clippings root it'll work a lot better. I had about a 10% success rate with the cup of water technique. It's just one of the harder plants to get going.

Would you believe mine outdoors have already gone to seed?! I let some indoor coleus do that last year and it grew 2 feet tall and made a huge mess everywhere, LOL. Pretty, but messy

It hasn't done anything yet...I'll ask at lowes about a rooting solution.

although the mint that is taking over my yard was so pretty when I cut it back that I threw the clippings into a vase on my dining table. Yup - the mint is all rooting lol

Just what I need, more mint

It took a few weeks but there are roots starting on all of my coleus clipping! I almost gave up after 2 weeks! I've been wanting a shade garden on my patio but can't justify anymore money toward the garden right now so I've very excited this is working!

I know I'm a little late chiming in, but for future reference.. when I cut my coleus, if I want to root more, all I do is stick them in the dirt and they grow roots with no problem. I've tried rooting things by putting them in water, but that's too much trouble for me.. LOL Just stick the coleus clippings in the ground and they will grow too.
