venting Moss in the lawn

The back of our house gets very little sun. There is a small wooded hill area behind our home. This blocks most of the sun. We have never been able to grow anything back there, not even grass. The ground is full of moss.

I started a shade garden, close to the house, bleeding hearts and hostas and they are doing well. The area that should be lawn is moss. If I were to start a lawn, with a shade mix seed do I need to dig up the moss? Should I till the ground? It is hard packed, rocky soil. I want to do it right. My dh never did, just throwing the seed down, not preparing the soil in anyway. It is the reason why we do not have a lawn back there in the first place. He will not listen to me or any of my suggestions so this is something I will need to do on my own. I will do it and tell him it is done and not to go back there and mess with anything. Dh does not have a green thumb~

I have a friend who has a tiller and would come over and help me with this. I want to do this right. I am tired of looking out the window and seeing bare ground, now with moss

I also would like to trim the trees back a bit to let some sun through. I have asked dh to do this...hmmm. we have lived here 15 years, do you think he will ever do it? I will see what my friend can help me with...

Maybe this was more of a rant than a question seeking post~sorry about that.

Our whole yard is mossy. We just moved into this house last year and I miss grass. We have tried turning up the earth and planting grass. Each time, the grass grows fine for a while then it dies and the moss comes back. We have a few small patches of grass here and there and some wild straberries and such, but mostly moss. I have been told by neighbors that it is really hard to get rid of and just get used to it. I'd also be interested in hearing if anyone else has any suggestions.

Get the soil's pH tested. Sometimes, when the soil isn't given the opportunity to dry out, the moss grows as well.

Our whole back yard is Moss and Buttercups and then our front (where the sun is... lol) is Grass and Dandylions. I know that here the sun shine and how long it is in the sun REALLY makes a difference in the moss content of the yard.

But our backyard (where the moss is) is twice as soft as the areas that are all grass... so I mow it, leave it, and I am happy. And if I leave it for long enough this time of year this is what it looks like: Teeehehehee...

Oh Val, if my back yard looked like that I would be happy...but, just hard packed dirt/rocks and moss. Not very nice to look at. My back yard gets little to no sun~
