venting Ants & Gophers!

Okay, I lied when I said our backyard was nothing but weeds... It's also full of big red ants, and gopher holes. I'd like to plant some veggies back there, but if the gophers are going to take everything, what's the point?

And I don't want to trap or poison them, any natural suggestions? Anything tried & true???

And how do I tell if we have fire ants? I'm going to try putting out a Borax/sugar mix for them, will it work? They have holes all over our yard...

I have no answers for you but am searching about gophers as well. We've already lost 1 head of lettuce and i had to go ahead and pick the other 2 before they were taken. Yesterday, the last little bit that i left was gone. I got so mad that i stuck the water hose into the hole and let it run for about 2 hours (LOL) I know that it didn't do any damage b/c it never backed up so that shows me how long/deep the tunnels are :-( Ugh

I stuck broken open (I smashed them with the side of a knife) garlic cloves in the holes... I heard strong odors would keep them away and I put some in the mole hole and it work... at least for the last 4 days.
