I would start with a soil test... then go on to get what you need (organically of course) to make the soil rich and gardenable... then start looking for varieties that are good for your area, and start planting. Depending on the Zone you are in, you should be able to plant soon. A great one for a first time garden is Organic Gardening Book... The Patio Kitchen Garden gives great advice on what should go with what, and how things work together in limited space... The Herbal Companion is a wonderful magazine too... and there are these little flyers that you can get that talk ALL about certian plants. I have the kitchen herbs one and I just LOVE the way they set up their information. So comprensive! I can't find mine... but I have been reading it, so it is around here somewhere. I will find it and then edit.
I know that this first two days of this week I am adding dirt, and building beds. Then I am planting peas starting on the 9th (Cancer moon) and perhaps sunflowers. I am also going to talk to my dad about using his spot becuase mine is small and planting corn and potatoes in the places he does not use.... wild flowers too. I have a big week ahead of me.
