I, for one, feel much more cruddy whenever I look in the mirror and see a pale face with dark circles under the eyes... I just wanna cover it up and revive my face...you know to look "alive"
thanks for the ideas!

I wear lip balm and that's about it. I have a tube of mascara somewhere that's probably too old to even use anymore, but I used to do that if we were going out dancing at night or something.

I wear makeup maybe four times a year - only at "firm functions" or weddings or funerals, pretty much.

Or the theater Took DD to see Joseph this year and I wore make up

I have (and wear)
Shiseido powder base (it's a compact that goes on like powder, but you can get the applicator wet for more coverage)

Some kind of concealer - I don't remember the name - drugstore brand. It looks like a lipstick.

Burt's Bees black eyeliner (just a bit on top - not so much that it's noticeable, just to accentuate the lashes)

XXL mascara - it's the kind with the white base and then the black that goes over it. Again, drugstore kind.

Bobbi Brown lipgloss stuff - it's in an angled tip tube and it's a dark red, but it's very sheer - so it's like lip balm with a hint of color. I think it's called Maple.

Oh - and some blush, if I need it - but I have rosacea so my cheeks are always red and I don't like to draw any more attention to that.

Every day I obsessively use Burt's Bees lip balm. I'm almost out! ACK!
I have one in my car, one in my purse/bag, and one in the top dresser drawer at the moment. I NEED my lip balm. Used to be SoftLips, now it's BB's.

KimberMama - I don't know your take on tattoos and such, so I do not mean to put words in your mouth!
You know, I don't really care if people choose to wear makeup. What I don't like is the standard of beauty in our culture. For the most part, I think of tatoos, piercings, funky hair coloring, etc. as being more counter-culture than conforming to it (little ankle designs and lower back designs excepted, as they are downright trendy here in So Cal). Also, in my experience these are very much things that either young adults do, or people who purposely challenge the status quo.

To me there really is a difference between doing something because you want to, and not because our society expects it of you . The media portrays the ideal woman as one who has conservative hair (colored to cover grays, or nicely highlighted), nicely done makeup, not too much jewelry, no visible tatoos, etc. Just look at anchor women, the standard housewife on TV, women in commercials and print ads, etc.).

We grow up with those images. They represent beauty to us. We can think that we choose to wear makeup, but in most cases we are trying to conform with images of beauty that we have grown up with. What's up with foundation? Why do we need to cover freckles, pale skin, dark circles, wrinkles, or heack, even pimples? Aren't they part of who we are? We are conditioned to think that they are ugly. Heck, to me, dark circles on a mama are a badge of honor. Everyday, in every way, we are told that these things are not attractive.

We like to think things are changing, but in reality, it is harder to get a job if you are fat, don't wear makeup, have multiple piercings, especially facial piercings, have bright pink hair, are Goth, have tatoos, or are even less than 100% heterosexual, etc. In some industries these things are becoming more accepted and even trendy, but for the most part to climb the ladder (if you want to climb it, or need the $$ to feed your family) you need to conform.

Personally, I don't color my hair. It's brown. It doesn't need artificial highlights; either I get them from the sun or I don't have them. I don't have tatoos or unusual piercings. Some days I may have a pimple, or dark circles. I live in a sunny place and my face is white around my eyes from wearing sunglasses, but I don't wear makeup to "even out" my skin tone. My eyelashes seem to get thinner and lighter as I get older.

This isn't that coherent...I'm sorry.

I do, everyday! It makes me feel better about myself when I wear it. I started using Bare Minerals as foundation last year and I love it. It's so much easier! I don't wear a lot, just a little to enhance and conceal.

I think the "counter-culture" stuff (tattoos, etc) is jsut as much about conforming as makeup. It's just about conforming to a different culture.

OR - could it be that some people truly like wearing makeup and wear it because they want to?

How is this different than conforming with the images of the counter culture? Just because it's mainstream doesn't make it bad. I think I need to put that statement in my sig line, actually!

Anyway - I think that tattoos are really ugly and I hate lip and eyebrow piercings. I like makeup the way that I do it, but I think that many women wear it in a really tacky way. Good thing we each get to choose what to do with our own bodies!

It's like I wanna call you up and say, "Let's go shopping!"

yes, I just like wearing makeup. Of course the ever pressing worry of how society veiws me, is on my mind constantly too. I even...wash and brush my hair! I'm such a conformist.

Same here. I love the freedom of not having to bother with it anymore!

I think tattoo's and piercings started that way, but IMO, it's become such a trend that it's hard for people to be original these days.

I do choose to wear makeup, not because I'm trying to conform. Wearing makeup is a part of who I am.

Totally agree.

I used to be lazy and dress in sweats and slap on some lipgloss or something like that. But, part of feeling organized in my life is to dress for my days at home as well. I don't look overly made up, but I do look together.

I like MAC. Yup, it can be on the costlier side, however, it lasts just about forever (and I'm not talking mascara or stuff that needs to be replaced frequently). So, in the long run, I probably spend less than I would if I bought drugstore makeup (though I do buy Maybelline mascara and replace it every 3 months).

But, when I feel put together with clothes, hair, and makeup, I feel as if I'm going to my job of being a mom and I end up feeling more put together and I accomplish more.

I wear makeup everyday. I look like a washed out, beaten down hag without it.

If it's summer and I'm sportin' a good tan, I'll skip it. But during winter, esp Feb, I look absolutely hideous.

Well, I hate that women are told that they look nicer, more beautiful, etc. with makeup. I especially hate that girls and teens get this message. What is wrong with looking natural? Why is there one standard of beauty to uphold
I couldn't agree more.

Any pointers for an idiot?
I wish I had pointers but I feel like you! I would like to wear make-up if nothing else to cover the redness of my face that I am so conscious of. Yet I really don't know what I'm doing with the stuff!

Now maybe part of it is that I never wore make-up as a teen. those seem to be the few years in life where a person can do some really bad make-up and noone looks twice because "they're learning". Somehow at 28, after having a corporate job, you'd think I would know what I was doing already. I never went though the bad make-up phase & I'm afraid to go through it now.

It's also posible that I don't wear make-up because I don't know what I look like with it on. I had professional make-up done for a family photo when DD was 7 months old. I don't look anything like the person in that photo. I do foundation now (complete me from philosophy covers the red great) but when I look in the mirror I don't look like "me" (she's the one with the red face & weird hair!). So I err on the side of caution and do nothing.

I too would like to know what I'm doing and at least be *able* to put on make-up like other women but I"m just afraid.
