I was told once that ou should discard makeup - particularly eye makeup like mascara and eye pencils every 6 months.
is that true?
Then someone told me a year for foundation or powder and blush. But i mean, i wear makeup twice a week probably (church and stuff) so it would last me five years probably.
do you throw yours out or no?

I learned about clearing out makeup the hard way. I used to wear makeup only a few times a year (powder, lipstick). So, I've kept my pressed powder for like 5 yrs. BIG no-no. I came down with Pink Eye last week. The only thing that I can trace it back to was my using the old face powder a day before. I guess bacteria grew on it. Throw it out! I threw mine out and went to buy new powder. I'll toss it now every 6 months.

After years of Clinique, I have switched over to Target's Sonia Kashuk (sp?) stuff. I just have one little make up thing, but it has two lip glosses, eye shadows, pressed powder, brush... I also have a small bottle of foundation and a masacara. I probably have about $25 in makeup total. And it works well, looks great and isn't a ton of makeup that would take me years to go through. And yes, I do throw makeup out because it does go bad.
I do spend more money on actual skin care though, I should say.
you don't want to know. I only recently got rid of any eyeliner stub I've had since high school (class of 91!) and only b/c it was too small to use. It was the perfect color!!

<gasp> Shame on you, 2xlechemom! LOL. The horror I've never had any luck with buying anything from the regular stores (Cover Girl, Revlon, etc..). It never matches me. I'm either too ghostly or too dark for powder or foundation. So, I go into the department store and get matched. I just bought some Clinique powder.
I try to keep with the schedule of tossing things out. I've heard 3 months for eye make-up like pencils and mascara and 6 months for shadow since it goes on the lid and not right there where the eye opens. Conjunctivitis is NOT pretty. I've heard a year for foundation, powder and blush/warmth.
I use BE almost exclusively. Got some Smashbox on my wishlist for the next Sephora pilgrimage too.
I try to at least throw some bisque and warmth and some mascara on every day before dh gets home since he prefers me looking at least a little bit polished and is missing the high maintenence girl I used to be (lol!) so I go through it reasonably fast.
On a side note, dh said there was something on the news last night about a site...make-up alley or something like that...where people buy and sell used make-up. Can we say eeeww???

OK - I don't toss it because it lasts too long here with me hardly wearing anything.
I have a question, though. I would love to wear mascara more but I find, no matter what brand I use - expensive or cheap - that I look like a racoon with in a few hours. I've put on powder on my skin to make sure it's not too oily or anything that would cause the mascara to run (not that my skin is oily). What do you do to make it last?

I use Avon's lengthening mascara. I swipe pressed powder over my entire eye and lower eyes before applying. I remove powder from my lashes. I wait about 1 minute between coats and then I run a lash seperator through them after they are dry. I never have any runnning problems.
hey, Makeup Alley rules!! I love that website- yes, people do swap used makeup, and that can be dodgy, but there is more to the website than that (and I have swapped before- I just always sanitize whatever I swap for).
I toss old eye makeup, but everything else I hold onto for awhile longer.
My sister got some weird eye infection when she was about 7 from using old eye makeup from our dress up box, and it ended up affecting her vision, with capillaries growing down into her eye, so I am so leary of it now.
