Heavy Mama's and Hippie Clothes

After reading the last thread and really enjoying it by the way,
I am wondering what kind of hippie clothes look good on a mama that is, well, not so thin.
I LOVE hippie clothing and see all these cute things you all make and wear, but whenever I get a free flowing skirt or peasant top I look HUGE!
Any ideas?
I am not looking to be a galmour queen by no means, but I do want to look attractive and my husband does like to be proud to be with me when we are out in public.
And my children dont want to be embarrassed either, KWIM?

i'm somewhere around a size 20 (at 5'6" tall) and i find that my a-line patchy skirts are a lot more flattering than the typical gathered hippie skirts. i'm also rather buxom, so all those cute apron tops and halter tops are out of the question for me, lol. peasant tops aren't particularly flattering for me either. for me, v-neck tops are the most flattering....or longish tops with a crew neck or mock turtleneck, with a long pendant to create that sort of 'v' visual in the front.... if that makes sense.

basicallly, i really like patchy stuff, so i just 'make' patchwork fabric, so to speak, and use it to make patterns that are flattering on me.

hope that helped....

I have a hard time with regular peasant blouses too, but I found one a while back that is my favorite. (I think I actually got it at K-mart lol) Its made of a gauzy type cotton and has the full sleeves, but the body is more shaped. Its a v neck with kind of a wrap look. The left side is top stitched across the body, and then the bottom of the shirt (under the bust) is gathered into elastic cord horizontally every couple of inches. Its not tight, but it does give it shape. I'm a 26W so the fact that this doesn't just accentuate my pudgyness was a welcome surprise. The more fitted look of the top lets my get away with really full skirts. I also think the vertical strip patchwork looks a little better than squares or tiers. (I have to make all of mine 'cause I'm 6'1'' and like my skirts to my ankles. and eveything I buy tends to hit me mid calf)

Ohhhhhh

Their are others out there! I too have tried patchy skirts made one but I hated the way it looked on me. Lately I have a pattern of a jumper and use prefab or plain fabric and then add on appliques to doctor it up. Like one is a prefab autumn-ish jumper, another cord strip jumper, jean jumper with strawberry shortcake appliques, a tye dyed blue cord jumper with white ruffle trim things like this I like them my hubby likes them I know I get stares but who cares if I was thin and wore these I am thinking I would get stares especially in the town I live in I mean we do have crunchies but most people here are mainstream.

I was JUST about to post a similar question. Just a bump to see if there are any other suggestions for styles and if there are any WAHM's who make any in plus sizes. (or any pattern suggestions?)

Thanks!

lissa,

Is this the type of skirt pattern you were talking about?

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M4...e_sizes&page=2

I don't sew much, so I am trying to find the correct pattern. Any suggestions?

TIA

try and avoid those tiered peasant skirts that are in right now- they just add bulk. And anything too loose and flowy will just make you look bigger.. try and find more fitted clothes that show your shape more. That is a lot more flattering. (oh, and drawstring is a LOT more flattering than elasticated waists!)

ETA- you could also try a flowy skirt with a fitted top, or vice versa, depending on your body shape.
