How to get rid of fruit flies?

They are everywhere In the bathrooms, the kitchen, and around all the garbage cans around the house. My house if pretty clean, and i dont have any fruit out, its all in the fridge. Why am i getting these and why are they in the bathroom?? how can i get rid of them? My sil said she has them in her house too, and she thought they were in the bathroom because of her fruity smelling shampoo??

i'm guessing that a wine COOLER bottle would work the same way? (although the bottle is smaller/shorter) i don't wanna buy a bottle of wine, but i do have two coolers hidden away in a safe place (was keeping for pre-term labor), so can i use one of those-oh wise fruit fly trapping mamas?

My partner actually makes wine for a living and so he brings home a lot of fruit flies.. the method they use in the store, and what we do here at home is as follows:

Take a mason jar, open it up, place some piece of fruit inside (we use whatever is about to spoil in the house), then place a cone paper cup (you know dixie cup type or whatever) inside with a hole in the bottom....... they get in but can't get out... we poor bleach in once its full of flies to make sure they're dead, or if we're lazy we just throw out the mason jar..

Sounds a lot trickier than using a wine bottle.. I don't know why we do it this way, I've never asked... it works though... no flies after 1 night.

I use a mason jar of apple cider vinegar (other vinegars don't work) with a paper cone in it. I have caught literally dozens and dozens of them in like an hour. It's gross!

They might not be fruit flies, they might be fungus gnats. I have these ALL over my house! It is aggravating! They are stupid little bugs too, if I leave a glass of water out, they fly in and drown, they are all over my house plants.
I have tried diluted Dr.bronner's peppermint soap to kill them, I mist my plants, the soil, the pot and the walls around the plants, but nothing seems to get rid of them. I even tried my bathroom cleaner diluted which has tea tree and lavender (tea tree is a good antifungal oil)
My mom suggested repotting my plants, cause they lay their eggs in the soil....
by the way, they are NOWHERE near my fruit bowl. Lol.
