I just came across this and thought I'd share. It's worth putting up, cause the lice medicines are not working well anymore (immunity) and they are super pricey.

To get rid of head lice~

1- Mix a 50:50 *mineral or vegetable oil* and vinegar.

2- Massage thoroughly into hair and scalp.

3- *Cover* for one hour w/ a shower cap.

4- Shampoo out w/ regular shampoo

5- Thoroughly comb out nits etc... using a lice comb.

The vinegar detaches the nits form the hair shaft while the oil suffocates any live lice and makes for easy and smooth combing out of any detached nits and dead lice. There is a 100% sucess rate using this process.

I use mayo the same way. It works really well, and is a good treatment for dry hair.

I love keeping these rememdies in the back of my mind for when/if ever we need them. Thanks!!!!

I use desert essence tea tree oil shampoo. The tea tree oil and olive oil kill them. I discovered this when we got lice while I was pg. We couldn't use the chemicals if we wanted to. Wash three times a day and in three days they were gone. No picking needed.

Definitely going to have to remember these!!

Lice went around my school when I was (ack! getting itchy just thinking of them! LOL) in like 4th grade, and my mom used Rid, I think it was, and I HATED it.

Then I got them AGAIN because it just kept going around school and we all hung our hats/coats together and it was winter so everyone just kept getting it. Ugh.

I would vastly prefer any of these ideas!

Hope I never have to deal with lice, BUT if I do, it's good to know there are alternatives to the horrible chemical stuff!

We just dealt with the 3rd case of lice since January...it spreads through kindergarten like wild fire.

Vinegar really does work to loosen up those nits. Don't waste your money on the Robi comb, it's $30 down the drain because it won't pull the nits out no matter how you hold it.

Tea Tree Dr. B's used as shampoo will kill live ones. Tea tree oil added to your regular shampoo will repel them.

Don't forget to vacuum thoroughly, especially mattresses & inside the car. Wash backpacks or tumble them in a hot dryer for 10-15 minutes. If it's going through the school bag the stuffed animals and forget them until summer, LOL...as soon as you get them out the kids will come home with it again.

Get in the habit of doing a thorough comb through every night before bed and again in the morning before school. If you find anything take care of it right then & save yourself a lot of picking because they lay eggs really fast.

Don't be ashamed if your kids keep getting lice. Lice like clean heads better than dirty ones because they can grab onto the hair easier.

(knock wood) I think it's finally gone from dd's school and I hope to never see one of the little buggers again!

ARRGGGG!!

I HATE LICE!!!!

My dd had very long, extremely thick hair. It's a nightmare. We just went through it. Her poor room is barren, but I refuse to get anything back out.

Her best friend had them and gave them to dd.

I think I've finally won. No one else in the house got them - THANK GOD! Although the boys would be a walk in the park compared to dd. Lord have mercy. Every time I treat her (or re-re-re treat her), it's at least three house just on her hair because of the combing.

She just had a few nits (which of couse means at least one louse), and that's all she every got. But every time I checked for a couple of weeks, there were, like, four more nits. We've washed and dried pillows and comforters ad nauseum! LOL!

Anyway, I am going to try to oil/vinegar as a preventitive for a few weeks. I haven't seen anything for a while, but it just freaks me out.

Oh, and because we had to go through this, I refuse to use the term "nitpicking" ever again. LOL!

I would get a tea tree or rosemary shampoo for that girl! Really... my son has longer (for boy) hair and he has not gotten them since we had him use the tea tree shampoo... it does work... AND the mayonaise works BETTER than any other treatment I have done. A friend was infested by someone else for MONTHS and they were all treated half way (meaning some lice were living after treatment and soon became imune and then just grew up and reinfested) and mayo worked... she just slopped it on their hair (spreading out sections as she went) and put them in a shower cap to sleep in for one night... then redid it three days later. It was the most amazing thing! She had spent months trying to get rid of them. Now Alia (her dd) and Alex (my ds) are in the same classroom at school, and they both use the shampoo... there was one outbreak and it did not come home to us or them.
