HELP... bought a rug at yardsale today and it just STINKS!!!! help help

ok obviously the yardsale was outside ....and sprawled out in the grass was this beautiful huge 8ftx10ft area rug that i started to picture in the livingroom to cover up the dingy indoor outdoor carpart that the whole apt has ..... lady had 35.00 on it .. i got it for 25.00 not too bad i thought

she said she recently cleaned it so i figured great! they load it up in the trunk and thru back seat ... and on the way home i start feeling like im going to throw up!! ok blocks from home .... yes you guessed it ... threw up! what a mess lol sorry

i cant really leave anything sprawled out laying around outside here at the apt so i drug it into the apt and got it layed out in the livingroom ...and it just smells ... i sprayed it down with fabreeze ...that hid it for awhile ..but its back!!!

what can i do to GET RID OF IT!

i warned mike before i unlocked our door after picking him up ... "i hope it doesnt stink too much" he didnt know what i was talking about till i opened the door and he saw this rug on the floor.... he didnt say nothing about the smell till he got down on his knees and sniffed... if i can make his disgusted face i would LOL but he says it smells like a dog has been laying all over it and peeing and stuff ....??

the print of the rug is a great one cuz it doesnt show no stains or nothing! which is very obvious cuz the underside is pretty 'marked up' but i cant tell WHAT the stains are... some kinda funky looking ones at that LOL

thoughts mamas?? PLEASE i want to 'SAVE' this rug .... i dont want to part with it and be at a loss of $25.00 when i thought i was saving us $45-50.00 (figured id end up spending 60-70.00 on a new one) when i planned on buying a rug for the living room to be softer on cadens knees and nicer to lay down on floor .....

ideas, tips ect???? please im begging you LOL

thanks!!

I washed a large rug in my bathtub (not quite as big as your tho)

I kinda folded the rug or rolled it- but it in the tub- Added HOT water- and some dishsoap and laundry detergent- let soak for awhile-

Then I went in there with my broom and scrubbed back and forth. It was SO dirty- I had to change the water several times. YUCK!! I just kept folding the rug different so that I got different areas and sides. I hope that makes sense.

I am not sure what to do about the urine smell.

I would try the tub- or lay the rug outside and do the same method with maybe a bucket of hot water and the broom. OR maybe rent a steam cleaner? but honestly I would try cleaning it myself first.

Use baking soda for odor and maybe some vinegar?

I would dump water on it- or spray with the hose and then shake baking soda on it and then scrub.

Good Luck!

It depends on what it smells like and what the rug is made of.....? Do you know? Wool? Cotton?

get a steam cleaner and load it up with natures miracle. Natures miracle is an enzye cleaner that can be found in most pet stores, and it will get out most icky pet odors. If the store you go in doesnt have that one, ask them what they reccomend.

I would take it to a self serve car wash and blast the crap put of it (no wax) then take it home and soak it in the tub with fabreeze laundry additive.

Dep on how it's made I'd sick dh and the Kirby on it. Or dampen and rub baking soda in. You could do this by laying down towels or even newspapers first (on the hardwood or linoleum floor) and laying the rug over that and just "mop" it.

However, we have a lot of towels because I had towels and dh had towels before we met, and then when dh's grandmother died we for some reason got a box or more of towels, and...see? So maybe a normal person wouldn't have this many towels if they managed to find them all and they were all dry...

thanks mamas .. this was a lug to drag in myself and slip under furniture lol we had some incense burning last night but now its all gone ahhh lol ...

our kitchen floor is no where big enuff to fit this rug into it! tiny kitchen/dining area and i cant picture it fitting easily with out a mess in the bathtub? being 8feet wide, 10feet long ? and making an effective attempt at removing smell?

i think the rug is cotton cuz its not that itchy feel i get when i touch most wools and the threads on the ends are cotton

i kinda like the idea of bringing it to the car wash but mike would probably flip putting this big ole wet thing in the car lol and bringing it home ...

i need to shampoo and clean the entire apt carpet and would like to do that soon ... we are thinking of renting one of the big red things at walmart, never really looked at them just walked by em... is that the steam cleaner?? / shampooer? think that would work with a certain mixture to penetrate?

the nearest pet store is 45mins away and i wont be going to that town till monday ... and ill check then about the natures miracle

appreciate it and keep thoughts coming!! thanks mamas
